Tight Race & Higher Stakes

Its getting down to the wire and the leader board is tightening just as each game seems to be worth so much more than a point!

Conference Champs

All the regular season champs have been determined, and those points have catapulted Jaybird, Jutdog, CEO and ProgressMedia into contention with Top Dogs Akaoni, Babblemur & Boaris. Jaybird took in 32 points off 5 conferences, Jut 31 off 5 conferences, The CEO took in 25 from 4, ProgressMedia took in 24 from 4. The other 11 conferences were split among the others.

Now just 25 points separates 6th place from 1st place, while almost 100 points separates 12th place from 1st place.

Losers

Now a tribute to the little teams that sucked just enough to not win their conference tournaments so far and thus will likely be going to the NIT, if that:

Drake (Akaoni); Wright St (Akaoni); Creighton (Babs); VMI (Babs); Jacksonville (Babs); Austin Peay (Boaris); Southern Ill (Gunz); Old Dominion (Gunz); Murray St (HippieD); Northeastern (Jaybird); Green Bay (Jutdog); Milwaukee (Turtle); Belmont (Phun); Vermont (Phun); Davidson (Progress); Illinois St (Progress); Mid Tenn St (CEO); Oral Roberts (CEO);

It was fun, losers, although Creighton & Davidson might still be on the "at large" bubble and many of these guys will wind up in the NIT.

Bubble Teams

If you ain't sure, you are on the bubble. These teams need a good couple of wins during championship week to be considered for the NCAA Tourney. Who do you think should be in? I've added teams as "Locks" if they have already secured an automatic bid.

  • Akaoni
    • Locks: (4) Purdue, Florida, Texas A&M, Washington,
    • Bubble: (4) New Mexico, Dayton, Michigan, South Carolina
  • Jutdog
    • Locks: (4) Louisville, Wake Forest, Cornell, Utah,
    • Bubble: (3) Ohio St, Temple, Rhode Island,
  • Babblemur
    • Locks: (4) Michigan St, Arizona St, Syracuse, West Virginia,
    • Bubble: (2) Creighton, San Diego St,
  • Boaris
    • Locks: (2) Pittsburgh, Oklahoma,
    • Bubble: (3) Virginia Tech, Butler, Providence,
  • The CEO
    • Locks: (4) Duke, Villanova, LSU, UNI
    • Bubble: (1) Siena,
  • Jaybird
    • Locks: (3) North Carolina, Marquette, Kansas,
    • Bubble: none
  • Progress Media
    • Locks: (2) Texas, E. Tenn St.
    • Bubble: (4) Davidson, St. Mary's, Arizona, Utah St,
  • Phunmunki
    • Locks: (4) Gonzaga, Xavier, BYU, California,
    • Bubble: (2) Wisconsin, Maryland,
  • Gunz
    • Locks: (2) Memphis, Missouri
    • Bubble: (2) Boston College, Minnesota,
  • NotaTurtle
    • Locks: (2) UCLA, Illinois,
    • Bubble: (1) Miami,
  • Musashisan
    • Locks: (3) Tennessee, Clemson, Florida State,
    • Bubble: (1) Penn State,
  • HippieD
    • Locks: (1) UCONN,
    • Bubble: (2) UNLV, Oklahoma St,

Go George Mason! Beat VCU!
Go Zags!

The Top 4 (Akaoni, Jut, Babs, Boaris) have no Monday games, big chance for CEO, Jaybird, Progress and P-Munk to gain some ground...

I can see two CUSA teams on the bubble: Tulsa and UAB. If UAB makes it to the CUSA conf tourney final, I suspect they might just make it in. They would finish with a top 40 RPI, top 40 Sagarin, and a 24-11 record.

They really don't have any bad losses, such as Louisville, Oklahoma, Butler, Memphis, etc.

In computer-generated rating land, UAB looks better than Davidson, Butler, Ohio St, Florida, St Marys, UNLV, and Creighton.

Tulsa, though having a stronger conf record, doesn't have as good a resume, with worse losses, not a tough schedule, etc.

What else:

Wisconsin - IN
Miami - IN
Oklahoma St - IN
New Mexico - IN

Providence, Boston College, Maryland, Northwestern, UNLV, Creighton, San Diego St, Temple, and Rhode Island (dammit UMASS) all need some wins for sure. All are at least NIT bound.

What about Dayton: Losing 4 of their last 8, SOS hovering around 150, losses to UMASS, Charlotte, and St Louis? I think their outlook is better than the teams listed right above, but another loss in conf tourney to a nobody?

A couple of comments. First, looking at my team, only Washington and Purdue should really be looked at as locks, the remaining 6 teams all are bubble teams, but some have a better chance than others. I'd list them in order from most likely to least likely to make the dance:

Texas A&M, Michigan, Dayton, South Carolina, New Mexico, and Florida.

As to Jut's comments about Dayton, yes, their SOS isn't great and they played a relatively weak schedule. That said, they have a very solid record at 25-6 with an RPI at 22. Additionally, they have respectable wins vs. Auburn, Marquette, and Xavier. I think they're probably in unless they blow their opening game of the A-10 tourney. Personally I think he's just sore that Temple's not going to pan out...

RISE OF THE TURTLE

If you haven't noticed, our little buddy Notaturtle has been climbing slowly on the charts and actually winning games.

I believe that the Turtle has the opportunity to take this contest. Hear me out:

Imagine the (not inconceivable) possibility that 9 of his teams sweep their conference tourneys. Keep in mind Georgia did it last year, and Iowa has done it twice. And really, Turtle's teams are all capable. So we have:

UCLA takes the PAC 10: +18
Miami takes the ACC: +24
Baylor takes the Big 12: +24
Kent State takes the MAC: +16
Cleveland State takes the Horizon: +11
Ole Miss takes the SEC: +20
Northdridge takes the Big West: +10
UTEP takes CUSA: +17
Illinois sweeps the Big 10: +19

That gives Turtle, at the end of the week, 159 points for the week, added to his current 262, he would be sitting at 421, probably tied with Jut, Akaoni, Boaris, Babs, CEO, Jaybird, and Progress, but with 9 teams going to the NCAA (I already added the 4 pts per auto bid).

I think it could happen. Admittedly the ACC, Big 12 and CUSA are tall orders, but the others are doable.

For those CEO haters, lock him in for 6 of the 64, and a shot at a 7th if Mt St Mary's can avoid a third loss to Robert Morris, let's go Mounties........

The CEO just banged in Siena and VCU - congratulations! Now I hate you. Go Boaris! Down with The CEO! And down with Jutdog and Akaoni! Boo! Booooo!

Note Phunmunki just got Gonzaga in - YaY!

Now, had I not had about 20 people coming over the night of the expansion draft and listend to Jut with stupid Oral Roberts, I probably would have taken Radford.......and we'd have a new leader, I really wanted to see what the picture of the CEO looked like

I didn't recommend Oral Roberts, and had I, great for me. You're the dumbass that took a team with a near-losing record.

That being said, the Mitchell boys are on the rise! 3 in the top 6, including 2 & 3.

Babs is starting to fall back into his expected finish somewhere around 4 or 5.

... If I had more time in the beginning of the season, I would have taken Missouri and Utah State or something. I was rushed.

akaoni said...

From where I stand, it looks like the league has tons of parity right now. The top 5 teams within 7 points of one another. This will almost certainly change as we enter the tourney, but it's crazy close right now...

Anonymous said...

Interesting,

The CEO had no worst picks (arguably Mid Ten State could have been the overall worst), and no best picks (LSU in 4th round, VCU in 5th are steals).

Will be interesting in the next couple days as the big boys clash, any upsets in conf tourneys will certainly change things.

My new goal is to take Jut down, looking for a Louisville loss in third round of Big East tourney....

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

That is just crazy that I've played 26 fewer games than the CEO. Who'd have thought that some teams play so many fewer games. Obviously the Ivy with no conf tourney, but common - 26 games?

Anonymous said...

It's all in the upfront analysis.....

Anonymous said...

You don't get to the top by not being in the details......

Anonymous said...

I agree, Jutdog must be destroyed.

Go Idaho State!

Anonymous said...

If Butler beats Cleveland State tonight Boaris is back in the lead.

Anonymous said...

The other thing to Note, most of the CEO's teams have played through their conf tourney's, only three teams really left for me to play, and two get a couple of round byes, you will all make up quite a few games on me, if your teams win, over the next 5-6 days,

END OF WEEK PREDICTIONS

I've gone through the conference tourneys and a likely NCAA field of bids and scored it all and came up with the following prediction for the leader board at the end of Sunday night, including points and number of NCAA Tourney bids:

1. Jutdog 411 (6)
2. Akaoni 404 (7)
3. Jaybird 392 (6)
4. Boaris 389 (3)
5. Babblemur 387 (6)
6. The CEO 384 (7)
7. Progress 355 (6)
8. Phunmunki 349 (6)
9. Gunz 316 (4)
10. Notaturtle 297 (3)
11. Musashisan 295 (5)
12. HippieD 284 (3)

Given that the likely Elite Eight in the Tourney, and thus the recipients of a buttload of points, will be (in no particular order): Louisville, Pitt, UCONN, North Carolina, Memphis, Duke, Wake Forest, and Oklahoma;

Therefore, I'm calling this contest for Jutdog, who is on track to be the first back-to-back winner of the Babble-Ball Contest.

BOOO! Down with Louisville! Poo on Wake!

From the Archives - last year's Week Nineteen:

WEEK NINETEEN (Mar 11 - Mar 17) Championship Week and Brackets Determined

What a great week of basketball!

Jutdog continued his dominance winning 6 Conference Tournament Championships, including the Big 12 (Kansas) and Big East (Pittsburgh) as well as Oral Roberts, Butler, Davidson, and George Mason. Musashisan won 4 Tournaments including the ACC (North Carolina), the Big 10 (Wisconsin) as well as Drake and Kent State. Akaoni took Conference USA (Memphis) as well as Western Kentucky, Notaturtle took the Pac 10 (UCLA), Phunmunki took the Mountain West (UNLV). Babblemur got Nothing.

The week was capped with the NCAA Tournament picks on Sunday, where a plethora of points await us in this insane pool! Jutdog again lucked into an amazing 11 teams in the pool, but fortunately (or not) six of the 11 face each other in the first round, ensuring 3 quick losses (but also three quick wins) for Mister Menace. The breakdown for the players looks like:

Jutdog (11): Kansas, Stanford, UCONN, Pitt, Butler, Indiana, Arkansas, South Alabama, Davidson, George Mason, Oral Roberts,
Notaturtle (8): UCLA, Texas, Duke, Louisville, Miss St., St. Mary’s, St. Joseph’s, Baylor,
Musashisan (8): North Carolina, Wisconsin, Drake, Oklahoma, USC, Marquette, Purdue, Kent State,
Phunmunki (7): Xavier, Notre Dame, Michigan State, Gonzaga, UNLV, Oregon, Villanova,
Babblemur (7): Georgetown, Washington State, Vanderbilt, Clemson, BYU, Kansas State, Kentucky,
Akaoni (5): Memphis, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Arizona, Western Kentucky,

We now move on to the NCAA Tournament (and 5 measily points for the winner of the NIT…). While Jutdog has a significant point edge going into the tournament, five of his 11 teams are 9 seeds or lower and he will be seeing some early attrition. Notaturtle has a formidable line up with three #1 or #2 seeds (UCLA, Texas, Duke) and Louisville a three seed, but can he go deep enough to overtake Jutdog. Musashisan also has a long shot despite sitting on arguably the best odds for winning the whole thing (North Carolina). Akaoni, who has been giving Jut his closest challenge of late has a paltry 5 teams in the field but two of them have been ranked #1 and both could be in the final four. Phunmunki and Babblemur are out - so they are going to California for a week.

Didn't the win for both the babbleball contest and the Tourney pool come down to Memphis vs. Kansas? Maybe I'm mistaking the pool for the competition, but I remember thinking that a Memphis win would have given me the win in at least one of the two and maybe both...

...unfortunately poor free throw shooting and a miracle last second shot sent the finals to overtime and secured Jut's bragging rights in both competitions...

Ron said...

Kent State is screwed. Nothing new though.

Ron said...

Eh - Kent State beat N. Illinois anyways, how about that?

Anonymous said...

dumb question, but do we give points to the two play in teams, or just the one who wins?

Anonymous said...

and who, are you assuming, will get that play in winner in the 64 teams you have determined we'll all get in?

McGrumps said...

My players can punch people and still win. And commit grand theft and still win. That's why I'm #1.

Anonymous said...

Play in teams definitely make the tourney, earning the 4 pts. In addition, they are winning their first round game, earning a measily two.

When I set up the scoring, I viewed it as the winner of the play-in game just plays two first round games, each only worth two (plus 3 if vs another).

Man, with only 6 players, some of us had LOADED teams last year.
