McGrumps Wins Week Eight

Week Eight started many teams into conference play, the bread and butter of the schedules, and the beginning of the march to March Madness. (Shitty intro, but I had nothing else here.)

Last Week the Iowa Boys were big winners: McGrumps pulled in 20, Mooseye 19, and Akaoni 18. Some Guy in Illinois hit 19 to creep to within 4 points of Lord Jut, and Babblemur hit 18 to climb past the CEO. Our Leader board:

1. Gunz held his first place position off 17 points led by 4 for Duke and 4 for VCU who won back to back games. Gunz' lead has slipped to 23 points and he has a tough week ahead as Oklahoma State, Stanford, and Clemson have tough conference schedules. Duke and Georgetown however are likely to earn 6 points a piece in Week 9.

2. McGrumps rose from 5th to 2nd place off 20 points, going 12-3 for the week. Kentucky, Memphis, St. Mary's and Oakland had a solid week, Richmond bumped Wake, and St. Mary's took down short staffed Miss St. For McGrumps to make ground on Gunz he will need Memphis to take down Tennessee on Wednesday and Marquette to win a tough one against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

3. Mooseye rose from 4th to 3rd going 9-5 for 19 points. Those points came off 5 wins against other players, but 4 losses to other players were a lost opportunity to pass McGrumps. Charlotte came through against Georgia Tech, Florida won a big one against hot Xavier, but Wake and Western Kentucky are looking weak. This coming week Wichita State has a chance to prove themselves with 3 conference games, Florida faces Rhode Island and Ole Miss for 6 possible points, and UCONN has two big games against Texas and Notre Dame.

4. Boaris continued his downward descent, this week more to the lack of games against other players as he went 9-3 for 11 points. Tennessee continued to look weak in a blowout loss to Charleston, but everyone else held their own. Boaris has a BIG Wednesday where he could redeem himself - Tennessee vs. Memphis, UNLV vs. BYU, Louisville vs. Seton Hall, UAB vs. Duke, and Loyola Marymount vs. St. Mary's, for a potential 17 point day.

5. Mad Mader dropped from 3rd to 5th despite going 10-4 for 16 points. It is only going to get tougher for his teams now, Penn State faces Purdue and Michigan State next week, St. Louis is looking at Dayton and Temple, Notre Dame has UCONN and St. Johns.

6. Babblemur went 12-3 for 18 points to leap frog past the CEO, Purdue, St. Johns, Georgia and Colorado all went 2-0, but Ohio and Maine both lost winnable games. Babblemur only has 13 games next week with some very tough matchups (Georgia vs. Kentucky, St. Johns vs. Georgetown and Notre Dame, Colorado vs. Missouri).

7. The CEO won 8 games for 16 points but lost 7 with Washington State dropping two to USC and UCLA and Wofford losing back to back to VCU and Cornell. Fortunately for the CEO Gonzaga began earning their first round draft status with 3 wins. The CEO only has three games against other players but all of their games are winnable. If he goes 15-0 he is looking at 23 points next week.

8. Jaybird picked up 14 points to stay in 8th place. Going 2-4 against other players won't move him up the leader board. Georgia Tech's loss to Charlotte hurt, but Mississippi State's internal fighting is going to hurt the most in the long run. Jaybird has a lot of point opportunities this coming week, but can he win more than 3 of his 9 games against other players?

9. Akaoni climbed to 9th place pulling 5 points ahead of struggling Lord Jut off of a 10-2 record for 18 points. His mid majors Missouri State, Southern Miss and Dayton are bringing home the bacon, and Akaoni proved he can win against other players by going 4-2 in that category. Week 9 will be critical as Butler has 3 conference games including red hot Cleveland State, Northwestern has 3 conference games including Illinois and Michigan St, and Missouri State has 3 conference games including Creighton and Wichita State.

10. Jutdog went 7-5 for 9 points, but frankly he didn't have a lot of point opportunities this week. That's why Weber State's two losses to Montana schools hurt. He could turn it around in Week 9 though with Texas playing UCONN on Saturday, BYU facing UNLV, Seton Hall has two tough games against Louisville and Syracuse, and Rhode Island is looking at Florida and Xavier. If he tanks this week, look for hot SGII to pass him on the leader board.

11. Some Guy in Illinois is hot, going 11-2 for 19 points. His meat and potatoes are in conference play as Washington swept USC and UCLA and Illinois swept Iowa and Wisconsin. If he keeps winning in Week 9 he will be moving up the leader board. NC State has a winnable game against Wake on Saturday, Tulsa faces conference rival UTEP on Tuesday, and George Mason has 3 conference games including a tough Old Dominion on Saturday.

12. Slake B's losing streak continued going 7-8 for 9 points. West Virginia lost 2 conference games, Oregon lost 2, Miami Ohio lost 2, but on the bright side Ohio State is hot, Wright State went 2-0, and next week Slake has 8 games against other players for a lot of point opportunities.

13. Musashisan continues to raise the basement floor, going 7-5 for 13 points, only 7 down from Slake. Michigan State excels in Big 10 play and has a couple of good games this week. Baylor, Miami, Arizona State and Alabama could all score big this week, and Long Beach St is looking like winners after going 2-0 last week.

Standings after Week 8:

  • Current with all Jan 2 (Sunday) Games
  • 1. Gunz 156 (80-26)
  • 2. McGrumps 133 (81-27)
  • 3. Mooseye 133 (73-31)
  • 4. Boaris 131 (80-26)
  • 5. Mad Mader 130 (79-27)
  • 6. Babblemur 126 (79-29)
  • 7. The CEO 125 (73-31)
  • 8. Jaybird 118 (75-32)
  • 9. Akaoni 117 (79-25)
  • 10. Jutdog 112 (70-35)
  • 11. Some Guy in Illinois 108 (70-35)
  • 12. Slake B 91 (59-43)
  • 13. Musashisan 84 (64-41)

Mighty Musashisan has now pulled to within 3 points of Slake B. Tonight, Musa could make that push out of 13th place. It all comes down to #2 Ohio State playing tonight in Iowa City against the hapless Iowa Hawkeyes. Oh how I wish I could go to that game tonight! Iowa is the epitome of dashed hopes and dreams on the hardwood. I only hope that Iowa can stay within 30-35 points of the Banging Buckeyes.

akaoni said...

This is an especially bad matchup for the Hawkeyes as they don't have anyone in the middle who can match up with Sullinger (not that a lot of teams do). Still, I'm confident that I will not end up as the worst of the Iowa teams this year...

Wow, some harsh words and predictions for Tennessee and Memphis

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I guess Memphis was blown out by Kansas and Georgetown if you consider 13 and 17 point wins blowouts. The Georgetown game was a bit more lopsided, but that's because Freeman was unstoppable. Memphis will get better and better this year as the freshman get more games under their belt. I'd be scared to play them in March.

Good Work Ronald.

I'm looking forward to Wednesday's matchup in the MW - UNLV vs BYU - this is a tough matchup on the road for BYU in a extremely strong top of the conference. I mean, common - San Diego St is in the top 7 in the country.!!!

And nice work Milwaukee! Reviving hope that Detroit can still snag a piece of the title.

There seems to be some type of error, somehow I have Wofford on my team and not Cincy :o)

I'm guessing Cincy and UCF will be drafted early in the expanda-draft. If you start losing now, you might drop low enough to grab one.

Analysis of Gunz our Fearless leader heading into Conf play:

Why Gunz will be tough to unseat:
Duke and the fact that every team in the ACC got drafted except Virginia (I just have to drop another really here). Back up the truck, Gunz is going to get a ton of pts here.

G-Town (Are they in a funk, or are they vulnerable, time will tell, but with potentially the most veteran backcourt in the NCAA, I have to think they bounceback and take advantage of some big head to head pt ops). Jury still out here, but likely some solid pts rolling in.

Wisconsin: Let's face it, you do not win at the Kohl Center, don't pass go, don't collect 200 dollars, and don't expect to win. The loss on the road at Illinois is a potential concern, as wins on the road in the Big 10 are not going to be easy, and if you can't get it done at Illinois, good luck at Michigan St, Purdue, and Ohio State. However, getting 2 or 3 wins against that crew at home will keep Gunz in the running.

Why Gunz is Vulnerable:
Oklahoma St: The Big 12 is arguably the second best and potentially top conference this year trailing only the Big 10. There are some easy wins here, but getting key head to head wins could be tough.

Clemson: The ACC is pretty poor on the bottom, and with as many teams drafted as were, Gunz may get some pts here, but not expecting much out of this crew.

Stanford: Enough said, yikes!!!

VCU: Surprising loss last night, they have some quality wins, and I though could sneak in there in challenge for the conference. Strange things always seem to happen in the Colonial, this team will do fine, but likely not contribute enough to keep Gunz in the lead.

Bradley: Turn out the lights, the party is over, scoring another yikes!!!!

Overall analysis, Gunz will compete, but come the third stretch of the challenge, he may no longer be our leader, but with Duke, he'll be right up near the top.

Installment II If not Gunz then Who?

After some close analysis, I bring you the favorite and two not to sleep on, one that may surprise:

McGrumps McGrumps McGrumps and Why:

Kentucky: Is there any conference more messed up now than the SEC? What's going on with Tennesse? Florida has delivered points by beating good teams, but his the same issues Tennesse has, they have three really bad losses. And then there is the fallout even though he's eligible with Renardo Sidney. Suddenly the SEC is Kentucky's to take (it may have been earlier, but now it's gift wrapped). Yes, youth eventually gets served, I not saying this team can win the national championship, but points they will deliver.

Memphis: Another young team, and while they may lack that signature quality win, they should compete in Conf USA, although they'll have to grow up quick to win the conference. However, there is certainly some upside here.

Richmond: Okay, they were on all of our draft boards, but did anyone think they would be the 5th best points team at this point, and with powerhouses St Louis and Charlotte picked, along with the contenders in the A-10, there are some more points on the horizon.

Marquette: Has any team been more fun to watch. My wife thought I was going to have a stroke watching them play Vandy. This is not a team I would want to play in March, they are fast, they are athletic, they are not selfish, and they play hard. Think about what a Missouri - Marquette matchup would look like. In the interim, yes, they are small, but I think they surprise some teams in the Big East, and bring in more points than expected, this is a good team.

St Mary's: A couple of semi-solid wins early in the year and playing with confidence. It will be interesting to see how the Gonzaga games play out. They'll get some head to head action with Loyola Mary. but won't have too many other ops, however, likely a tourney team and more points coming.

Boston College: I'll admit, I didn't like the pick, and still don't understand the success, but hey, they are working on emerging as Duke's biggest threat. V-Tech is facing some injuries, Carolina is still working on getting together, and NC State will start to improve with their star back, but for now BC is playing good ball, and again, the whole ACC is picked, so here come some points.

Installment III Don't Sleep on:

Babs, is anyone's squad playing better and more consistent ball right now. One can argue they've peaked early (see Tennessee), but it's hard to argue with his recent rising in the rankings and team's solid play:

Purdue: The Big 10 is the toughest conference top to bottom. I thought Michigan and Iowa might be gimme games, but both have been competitive, Michigan very surprisingly so. However, Purdue went on the road and blasted Michigan getting one of those critical road victories under it's belt. It then handled Northwestern, it's early and some big tests loom, but they're going to be all right without Hummel.

San Diego State: Hey, I owned these guys last year and argued that they were very good, well guess what, they're all back, and really really good. Gonzaga has lost 2, maybe 3 games in their gym since it opened 6 years ago, and one of them was San Diego State this year. They play tough, they D up, and they board. I'm looking forward to seeing how they matchup in their big conference games.

Georgia: I still think they are more hype than good, but you can't arugue with results, and so far they have delivered, can they bring home some head to head wins over the struggling teams, likely yes, especially at home. They won't be the big driver, but they won't be a pain point either.

USC: I really like this team, I've seen them play Texas, Kansas, and Tennessee and they have a great mix of athleticism, speed, height, and shooting. They will get better, a little more seasoning and they likely would own wins over Kansas and Washington, and they will make some noise in the Pac 10.

Lastly: It's a bit of a leap, but don't sleep on that Dirty Boy from Illinois and here is why:

Washington: Sure, they hit a rough patch early, and A&M is a tough place to play, but wins at USC and UCLA have them looking solid, let's see how they do in matchup with Arizona and Wazu.

Illinois: They have struggled more than I expected coming out of the gates, but got a big win over Wisconsin. Can they get a big win or two on the road? Will they be the first to slow down the Sullinger Train?

NC State has been playing without their star for the last 10 games, guess what, he's back, and that can quickly help bring in some points, I mean, every ACC team is onwed.

Ole Miss: See previous comments on SEC, can this team win on the road, time will tell.

George Mason: I love the value of the pick here, and had a long debate with JutDog about Old Dominion or George Mason taking down the Colonial. Well, Old D has one of those Funky losses on their resume, but George Mason is still running clean.

He'll need some help though from Murray St (possibly), New Mexico St (Yikes) and Tulsa (could compete).

Don't sleep on these guys....

Some movement on the leader board. Mad Mader pulls ahead of Boaris and McGrumps from that 5 point Notre Dame win.

Watch out for Boaris tonight, he has 5 player vs. player games...

akaoni said...

I know right? If they had any sort of low post bodies to slow down Sullinger they could have pulled out the win. Although, I still think Iowa is amongst the weakest in the Big 10, it's nice to see a bit of upside from this squad. I think I'm becoming a Fran Fan.

Also, I appreciated CEO's analysis, however I think he is missing a key piece, namely NCAA tourney play. I also like Babs' and McGrumps' teams, however I don't know if either has that kind of "special" team to make a deep run in March Madness. If you don't win the championship, you have to have enough depth and have a big enough lead over the competition or have numerous teams make a deep run. I'm not sure that either of these teams has enough firepower to pull this off, and I'm sorry, I still don't see teams like Kentucky or Purdue winning the tourney. Winning their conferences is all well and good, but if you aren't able to make deep runs with multiple teams in the Tourney or have one team win the whole thing than I think that you'll probably fall short.

At least, that's how it has been in past years.

Well I'm just going to quote myself from my "Babblemur Predicts..." post in October:

1. Gunz ... "Gunz' squad is well anchored behind Duke with Georgetown and Wisconsin who should rake in big points. Oklahoma State is going to be good for 40 points, and VCU will surprise Jut and win the Colonial... Bradley is the only drag on this squad."

On Boaris: "...Tennessee is critical, if they implode Boaris will be in trouble..."

On McGrumps: "...McGrumps probably has the most parity among his teams from top to bottom. Quinnipiac, maybe his worst team, will bring in 25 points and win the NEC, Oakland will do even better in the Summit, can't complain about that. St. Mary's, Memphis, and Richmond are a beautiful trinity of mid-majors. The questions are whether Kentucky turns it on, and how many points Marquette and Boston College scoop up..."

But I think I was wrong about Jaybird, who I predicted would finish second: "Pitt, Temple, Arizona and Mississippi State is the best 1-4 on the field."

And right about Jut: "...I'm predicting terrible disaster for Jut this year..."

Anonymous said...

Somehow in my analysis of Babs team I forgot St John's runout to a 3-0 start including 1 upset in the Big East. Win's will be at a premium, and this is a great start.

To answer the question of NCAA depth, yes, it has been critical, but I see a lot more parity this year, in past years, there was a team or two that had 2 and 3 teams in the great 8, while that could happen, this year, with the expansion to 13 players, head to heads and conference play will account for more pts than normal, and the NCAA per rules change was minimized a little. Your point is valid, i.e. my quote on GUNZ have Duke.

If I had to call a final four today, based on early play it would be:

Duke (Good or Bad teams, they've played solid, although losing Irving hurts)

Texas(Don't sleep on this team, they are talented, sharing the ball, and getting better every game, this team hasn't peaked yet, and the USC loss was a great lesson for them)

Pitt (This is a deep team, they have great senior leadership, and experience, and they will D up, they have had a few hiccups along the way, but I think are still the cream of the Big East Crop)

Ohio St (although this team comes with the most questions, no doubt talented, but I haven't seen them play a real quality team, I'll count Florida as a medium challenge, and add bonus pts for it being at Florida, but it's hard to say just how good this team is)

So based on that, fill in the blanks, JutDog, Slake, Gunz, and Jaybird all have championship potential, not to say the rest of us don't. Note, only Gunz made the CEO's pre-season II analysis based on his performance in season 1.

There are some new players here, so let me provide perspective on what I mean by season:

Season one in the Babs challenge is Pre-Conf games (tourney's, cupcakes, and a few quality head to heads)

Season two in the Babs challenge is conf play, where the real cream rises, and cupcake eaters are exposed (this has happened to our leaders two years in a row after quick run outs, sorry Gunz, but you're at risk here)

Season four is Championship week, between conf tourneys, conf and conf tourney champs, and NCAA bid pts, a lot of pts go down over this period

Season five: NCAA and Post season tourneys

A player has to play solid in all 5, but need not win all 5 to win this challenge. Jutdog got it done last year without winning or sending a team to the national championship game.

Seeing as Babs and I agree on 3 out of 4, start filling in your brackets now, he does however, not share my enthusiasm for the development of Texas.

Michigan St could get in there too, they seemed to click very well in the second half of a game Minnesota could have won (oh if Mbawke hadn't gotten in foul trouble......)

CEO has some good points. It will be interesting to see how the expansion and rule changes impacts scoring. I still think that a team with a legit contender (of which I see 5-6) is at a significant advantage, but we'll have a much better picture once we get through league play and championship week. On to Season 2!

Northwestern got beat by a good team at home. This is neither unexpected or especially noteworthy. As a 5th round selection they were always bubble material and still are. They gave Purdue and Michigan St. tough games and their schedule will get easier from here on out.

I could have done far worse with my 5th round pick and picked a team like Seton Hall or Cornell. That said, my team still stinks. It's a shame that Jut, Jay, and SGII can't get their acts together and pass me in the rankings so I can improve my auxiliary draft position.

That, ladies and gentlemen is how you lay a turd, first you march out your teams in some critical but winnable games, you start the day by getting blowing out and forgetting how to D (Missouri), let's hope that's a wakeup call.

Then, in a critical heads up matchup at Wofford, you lose to the other team picked with you as a legitimate contender (Charleston).

Then your team blows a 14 pt second half lead and forgets how to D up the 3 pt line (Vandy) at least Kentucky got beat too, so they didn't really lose a game on the league favorite)

Then UCSB in a must win, collapses and gives up 5 pts in the last 50 seconds to lose to Pacific, ouch, can you say not so favored anymore by anyone to win that conference, the fact they beat UNLV will hurt UNLV more that it will help UCSB at this point.

Let's hope Washington St can hold on and provide something....

I see BABS had a monster day though

Ooo! Ooo! I can't wait to check the score board and see my monster day! It looked uphill this morning. Got on a plane to Wyoming, just got through the hotel wireless.

I was just messin with the shooting.. anyway, speaking of laying a turd, replay the last 2 minutes of the UCONN V TEXAS game. First Hamilton steals and goes for the breakaway one-handed dunk only to dunk it off the back of the rim and then fall over the ball. But alas, with 7 seconds left, a UCONN freshman gets the ball on the Texas side and chucks it out of the stands across the whole stadium. Texas obviously gets the ball back, but just suck balls in crunch time. UCONN is not that good, and should begin to faulter early in any post-season play.

It was great to see all of the upsets.
