Powerhouse Trios

The last two years, the winner of the league was the owner of the NCAA tourney champion (Jutdog with Kansas and Jaybird with UNC). The best bet in breaking this cycle lies in the powerhouse trio, a collection of dominant teams that will win important games and score loads of points. So who's got it and who doesn't:

Contenders:

1st place: Akaoni
This is without question, and simply due to the unanticipated success of Syracuse. Akaoni has #2 Texas (11-0), #5 Syracuse (12-0), and #17 Washington (9-2). Each of these teams has a real likelihood of winning their leagues, and receiving 1 and 2 seeds in the NCAA tourney. Not a bad lineup for the current leader. Talks of the remainder of Aka's roster proving too weak may not hold, as in the end the lead produced by these three squads might allow Aka to donate his bottom three teams to the needy, such as Babs.

2nd place: Jutdog
No surprise that Jutdog made the top three, since he's writing this. But seriously, 3 teams in the top 14 in the nation, including unbeaten and #6 West Virginia, #12 Kansas State (12-1), and #14 Tennessee (9-2). WV has 5 wins over other players, while KState has 4. Tennessee has yet to really show any worth, and may prove to be a weak link.

3rd place: Jaybird
Kentucky has proved to be worth the risk, dominating opponents and reaching 13-0 and a #3 ranking. Jaybird has more though - #13 Georgetown (9-1) and #22 Florida State (11-2). This is a strong trio that has placed jaybird in 2nd. If any of these three teams slip, Jaybird's Dayton (10-2) is ready to step in.

In the Dump and looking forward to next year:

Close to Worst Place: Punmunki
I didn't like the 2nd round selection of Michigan, and I don't think Phunmunki does anymore either. While her first team is very good - 8th ranked Villanova (11-1), her other top teams just hang outside of the top 25, including Texas A&M (9-3) and Wake Forest (9-2). Phun's season may rest solely on Villanova.

Worst Place: Babblemur:
Top three teams don't even crack the top 30: California, Butler, and NotreDame, or next closest Richmond We'll give him his top 4 teams, and together they don't even come close to the powerhouse trios or the leaders. This year might just resemble Bab's first season - only without the excuse of "going green". Unless Jacksonville can pull off something amazing, Babs should have the first expansion draft selection - will he sink as low as Steve Alford? Washington State? How about Missouri State?

Nice win for Wisconsin over Ohio State. Michigan again hurts munki with a loss to Indiana. 1 game into the Big Ten season and Indiana has already matched last year's win total.

Question:

During the team Drop/Add period coming up, can players pick pup teams other players have dropped before them?

Not that there's any likelyhood of this happening, but I think we should clarify the rules just in case.

yes - nothing indicates that this wouldn't be the case - only obvious off-limit squads are non-D-1 and those which other players "have". Dropped are fair game.

I concur, but I thought I would pass it by the "commish" for an official ruling. ;)

Whoever asked that question, I'll trade you Arkansas now :o)

Did Tyler Smith get worse over the summer? I did just learn that his freshman season was at Iowa, averaging 14pts per game. The guy's stats have been halved this year. Common.

Jacksonville for Arkansas. Sold.

I would almost make that trade, selfishly, it would gain me points, but in the race, it will hurt me, as Arkansas could seriously go without a win in the SEC this year..

I'm still considering it though,

What, Prudue, UConn, and Gonzaga don't make the list? What if you add Georgia Tech and Memphis? Nice analysis, Jerkdog.

Does your power three survive after WVA getting destroyed today?

Yes - without question. A road game at Purdue is always going to be tough. Further, Purdue is expected to dominate early on - they are veteran-laden now, starting 3 juniors and 2 seniors. Purdue looked good, and WV looked really bad. Everyone knows that both teams will contend for their conference title, and that waging their value as a team on one game would be, well, stupid. Just as an addition - WV is already 2-0 in conference play.

However, you may have a better argument with Tennessee players getting arrested for weapons and drugs.

Finally, concerning Zaga and Uconn, who would they replace in the top 3? Jutdog has 3 teams in the top 15 - more than anyone else. Jaybird has a Kentucky team that is playing better than everyone except Texas, not to mention TWO other top 25 teams.

On the other hand, UCONN had just lost to a good Cincy team, has already lost to Kentucy, and who's best win is... William and Mary or Harvard.

Contain the anger and rather celebrate the 5 pts received for the V over a top 10 team.

Houston lost to Texas San Anton
Illinois St lost to Missouri St
Dayton lost to New Mexico
Creighton lost to Indiana St
West Virginia lost to Purdue

Yesterday was loser day I guess, only two teams won their games.

I think Turtle's Three are contenders depending on if UCONN sucks or not, which is hard to tell right now. If they fall to Notre Dame then yeah, UCONN ain't no players.

BUT I don't think Georgetown is all that, Dayton just fell to NM, but Florida St is scary.

I think there is a lot more parity around here than scores are showing (myself excluded).

Look at Jut's top three:
West Virginia just fell to Purdue,
Tennessee lost to USC (a Pac 10 team for shits-sake) plus has to bail out players from jail to make roster;
Kansas State is at best the third best team in the Big 12, which is just not that "powerful".

Akaoni? Can Syracuse hold this pace?
Washington is the best team in the worst conference (and they are short);
Texas however is bad ass.

I think this is going to come down to the national championship again. That means the real players in this are:
Kentucky (Jaybird)
Kansas (Boaris)
Texas (Akaoni)
Purdue (NotaTurtle)

The rest of these players teams just have to not suck too bad.

Big game tonight in the Summit league with 3-0 (in conf) IUPUI facing off with 2-0 (in conf) Oakland. This will leave only one undefeated team in conf, go Grizzlies,

how bad can Boston College get?

Well, that was a miserable day, maybe my luck has changed with the new year. Oh well, maybe it’s time to start dusting off the old pessimistic worldview that has served me so well over the year. The triumphant frontrunner suit never really fit well anyway.

Ha.

Your bad day net you 6 points. Only NotaTurtle surpassed that with 10 off of three big wins against other players, including an amazing overtime Gonzaga win over Illinois in Chicago.

I had what I consider a "good" day, going 5-2 for five points. I'm pissed about Jacksonville losing by ONE to Mercer.

Gunz had a "miserable" day, going 0-3, but he has possibly 7 easy points today to make up for it. Duke v. Clemson, Wisconsin v. Pen St.

With Northern Iowa's win today, Missouri St is now 12-0 against all other players, including a win over Tulsa, and 0-2 against the CEO (amazingly, their other loss was to my super Arkansas team. Just wanted to share that "strange" stat.

How did Arkansas in theory "beat" UAB, only to give up a dunk with 1.1 seconds to go off an inbounds pass to lose.

Speaking of close games, Texas struggled with Texas A&M Corpus Christi

Go Clemson, let's catch Duke on an off night like you did last year when I had Duke,

His career stats (18 years) are staggering: 629 dingers; a .302 average; 2775 hits; .567 slugging % and .953 on base plus slugging (OPS). Yes, I have also lost money in the market. Serrated: a serrated knife blade features notched teeth that are used for heavy duty cutting. Recon may be useful for tank destroyers or tanks with poor visibility such as the KV5.
