Gunz Shoots, Gunz Scores (Akaoni Still Leads)

Akaoni Akaoni Akaoni! What about Gunz???

Granted - Akaoni's Texas knocked in 5 points for beating North Carolina, hit 17 points off of 11-2 play, extended his lead from 8 points to 12, and held onto the number one spot for the umpteenth week in a row, but Week Six went to GUNZ.

Gunz shot up the leader board with 20 points, going 12-2 and climbing solidly into fourth place, challenging 2nd place Jaybird and 3rd place Boaris and leaving the rest of us in the dust. Mississippi State nailed 6 points off wins over Wright St. and Houston. Duke put down Gonzaga, and Old Dominion upset Georgetown. Even UCLA won a game, and UNLV won three.

The Bottom Six players got all jumbled up into a virtual tie as Some Guy in Illinois picked up 14 points to stay in last place but just a point back from Babs, the CEO, and NotaTurtle at 80, with Jutdog and Phunmunki lurking slightly further ahead at 82.

Phunmunki gets the dubious distinction of the worst week, going just 6-4 for 6 points, losing big games to Kansas, Kansas St, Butler, and Illinois-Chicago.

Week Seven looks to be Merry as teams pack games in on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the feature game undoubtedly Tuesday's #2 Texas (Akaoni) vs. #9 Michigan St (The CEO). Tuesday's Nevada-BYU game is a classic mid-major matchup that happens to be between our #2 and #3 players Jaybird and Boaris. Wednesday's Illinois (Akaoni) - Missouri (Some Guy) game is a great annual smashup and worth watching - can Akaoni be knocked off his pedestal?

And lets try not to forget the forgettable "Hawaii Diamond Head Classic", a two point tournament that turned out to have only two player teams in it: UNLV (Gunz) and St. Mary's (Boaris). This starts Tuesday, semis on Wednesday and finals on X-mas.

Standings after Week Six:

# 1. AKaoni - 111 (69-12)
# 2. Jaybird - 99 (62-17)
# 3. Boaris - 95 (63-14)
# 4. Gunz - 92 (62-20)
# 5. Jutdog - 82 (57-19)
# 6. Phunmunki - 82 (55-27)
# 7. The CEO - 80 (60-25)
# 8. NotaTurtle - 80 (54-22)
# 9. Babblemur - 80 (50-27)
# 10. Some Guy in Illinois - 79 (59-24)

Let's face it, it's really still all about me.

I mean after Texas crushes Mich St for it's second dominating victory over a top ten team in four days, Washington pummels an overacheiving Texas A&M team, and Syracuse takes care of business against Oakland (keep on dreaming CEO) I'll be so far out in front that the remaining bunch of rag-tag losers will need binoculars to catch a glimpse of me. I would think that someone would step up at some point but with this group I'm starting to have my doubts.

Happy Holidays

Akaoni is suffering from the Boaris affect - blinded by early success, he will begin to realize how shitty his squad is once conference season starts up, and Baylor and company can no longer get by on wins of East Iowa Tech.

Granted Texas and Cuse are good - as was Pitt and Oklahoma last year for Boaris. Who else? Maybe Washington? I have Aka finishing 4th.

As long as we are within 40 points it is all about the NCAA Tournament - winner takes the contest. I predict Butler over Maryland in a thriller double overtime...

akaoni said...

That's about as likely as saying that Alcorn State will best Arkansas Pine Bluff in the NCAA tourney.

Ron said...

Well Alcorn State *could* beat Arkansas Pine Bluff in the NCAA Tourney - in the Play-in round.

Mark my words: Butler and Maryland in the Championship Game...

Akaoni kicked ass again - 20 point lead now. 40 points ahead of Babs.

Boaris kicked some ass yesterday as well - BYU's win over Nevada and Kansas over California kicked Boaris up into second place, past last year's champ Jaybird.

I have to say that Texas and Kansas are two really really really good teams from what I saw last night.

Enjoy you temporary time on the throne, your head will be on a plate shortly enough, although Texas has shown the moxie to contend for final four, it's hard to tell something about a team that plays it's tough games at home. Same with Kansas, who have they played yet this year? California, a Pac 10 washup, and at Kansas, wow, look out!!! Like Jutdog said, ask Boaris, this time last year he was flying away with it too. I give the Big 10 credit, Purdue went to Alabama, Michigan State to North Carolina and to Texas. How is Texas going to respond down 10 on the road later this year, hard to tell, they haven't gone anywhere yet....

On a serious note, I agree that Texas has yet to show if they can pull out the big games away from a home crowd. There were a number of calls in the game last night that I thought looked like home field type calls (or Duke calls since the Blue Devils get the calls everywhere they go) that could have changed the course of the game if called differently, but that can be said in just about any game. Still, Texas at least has played 2 final four teams from last year, that's more than most schools can claim.

To some extent, the less heralded Syracuse has shown a bit more on the road than Texas (and Kansas for that matter) by blowing out North Carolina (and Cal) on a neutral court in MSG and Florida in Tampa. Regardless, I think that both of these teams look like solidly top 10 teams.

To be honest, it's the rest of my bench that I'm worried about, especially in terms of winning on the road. In fact all of my teams' losses have come on the either on neutral courts or on their opponents' home courts. This is of course to be expected with pre-season tourneys and home cupcakes being the bulk of the schedules to date, but it's still kind of bothersome, especially looking at Illinois, who has lost to three teams (Utah, Bradley, and Georga) who they arguably should have beaten relatively easily. Yes, they did have a miraculous comeback vs. Clemson, but they haven not shown that they have what it takes to win on the road and it won't get any easier in the Big 10.

So I guess I have to agree with most of CEO's points.

All that said, none of the other teams have shown that they have teams that can stick with mine this year and until that happens I think I can pretty safely assert bragging rights.

Have I mentioned that I'm in the finals of my fantasy football league as well?

Just sayin'....

The key will be Syracuse, can those guards hold up in the Big East, or are they a .500 team. MSG is a loose definition of a neutral court for Syracuse, but how do they do when they play Villanova, UConn, Louisville, night in night out. I almost drafted them, but it was the guards ability to play at that level consistenetly that scared me away. Still, I do admit I regret not taking them.

The points will also shift significantly the days that conf's and conf tourney's are decided, as well as NCAA bid's assigned.

There are really three phases to this league, (Pre-Season, where you get a false positive, league play, where the cream rises to the top, and tourney time that differentiates the teams that are peaking at the right time, see Villanova last year for CEO).

I am officially crowning Akaoni winner of leg one, now let's see:

Phase 1 surprises / dissapointments:

Surprises:

1) Gonzaga with some huge head to head wins in what many considered a rebuilding year, but, was the Duke loss a small bump, or signs of things to come?

2) Syracuse, no one doubted their front court, but Rautins and Triche are the real keys to the early success, can they keep that up.

3) Kansas St, Jutdog called this, can they build on preseason success once into the Big-12 season

Dissapointments:

1) The Pac-10, enough said, but some of us did see this coming and didn't even draft a school

2) UNC's guards in big games, what happened against Syracuse, if their guards can elevate their level, UNC makes the final four, if not, could be an early exit this year for my heels

3) Oklahoma, enough said

Season two will start soon:

Who dominates the point laden head to head big 10, Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State?

Who plays consistently night in and night out in the ACC? Duke, UNC, Georgia Tech, Clemson?

Who is the best in the Big East?

Good luck to all, Akaoni, congrats on winning leg one.

USC won the Hawaii Diamond Head Tourney yesterday, over 11-2 UNLV (Gunz), 9-3 St. Mary's (Boaris), and Western Michigan. This is coming off a 20 point win over Tennessee (Jutdog).

Pac 10 has a new playa in town - and no one owns them...

From the official rules:

Interim Draft and Release:

- The last week of January, each player must draft 2 additional teams.
- Draft order will utilize snake method, with pick 1 going to last place point earner
- A voluntary third round will take place following the 2-round draft, in which one team from the original roster can be dropped and a new team picked up. All existing points from original team will remain. Order will continue snake method from round 2.
- Points will begin to be earned by the new teams on February 2, and new points will no longer be added for the discarded team effective February 2.
