Week Two - Tournament Time?

Week Two features a handful of early season tournaments, which could lead to some interesting head to head match ups that aren't on the schedule yet.

NIT
Kicked off Monday, with four player teams involved, but no head to head games in the first two rounds. Unlike some of the "cowards" tournaments, every team has to win the first two rounds to make it to the final four next week. So far Duke (Gunz), Western Kentucky (Jaybird), UCONN (Turtle) and Arizona St (Some Guy) have all survived round one, and at least three should sail to the final four next week. The Hilltoppers will have to best LSU to earn that right.

Coaches Versus Cancer - Thursday and Friday
Syracuse (Akaoni) and California (Babblemur)
North Carolina (Some Guy) and Ohio State (Boaris)
Winners play friday, losers play friday, the team that wins will pick up 8 points (3 per win and 2 for the tourney.)

Puerto Rico - Thursday, Friday, and Sunday
All teams will play 3 games, and there are five player teams in the 8 team field.
Dayton (Jaybird) and Georgia Tech (Turtle) face off in round one in a "game to watch", with the winner likely facing Villanova (Phunmunki). On the other side, Mississippi (Some Guy) and Kansas State (Jutdog) could face off in round two if they get past Indiana and Boston U.

Charleston Classic - Thursday, Friday and Sunday
Don't laugh! This tournament has really stepped up in caliber!
Okay, only South Carolina (Akaoni) and Penn St (Turtle) are in the 8 team field, but they could face off in the final if they run it.

Paradise Jam - Friday, Saturday, and next Monday
Four player teams play non-player teams in round one, but will likely face off in round two on Saturday. Northern Iowa (The CEO) could face Tennessee (Jutdog), and Boston College (Jutdog) could face Purdue (Turtle), with the finals next Monday.

The only other good games this week are UNLV (Gunz) and Nevada (Jaybird) on Wednesday, and a handful of great games tonight (Michigan St v. Gonzaga, Kansas v. Memphis,)

Wow, Iowa is bad. Asking for even 10 wins sounds like a longshot. It's all Alford's fault.

On the bright side, my fourth and sixth round picks came *this close* to knocking off the #1 and #2 teams in the nation! Both of those teams should be in the Top 25.

Nice - Cornell first knocking off a decent SEC squad, then taking down a solid Atl 10 team in UMASS.

On to some of their toughest challenges of the year in Seton Hall and Syracuse.

I was pulling for both Memphis and Gonzaga - very close!

Sorry I haven't updated nothin' yet for wednesday games, I fell asleep at 9 with the children and haven't had a chance yet. It'll be done in an hour. Please tell me Butler won.

YES!

Huh, Jaybird's Dayton and my GTech are faceing off *right now*. Fuck work. It's nice being your own boss.

..and the Dayton bench delivers - 3 players in double figures, including 19 from sophmore guard Chris Johnson.

..and wow did George Mason almost pull off a win over Nova. This has been the year of the almosts for the small guy. May Long Beach State, Cornell, and Radford deliver!

Dear NotaTurtle:

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue point guard Lewis Jackson is out indefinitely after surgery Tuesday to repair a foot injury he suffered in practice last week.

Jackson started 30 games as a freshman last season and averaged a team-best 3.3 assists per game. He was expected to return from two suspensions in time for the No. 7 Boilermakers to play South Dakota State on Friday at the Paradise Jam in the Virgin Islands.

Jackson missed the season-opening win against Cal State Northridge for playing in an unspecified NCAA-sanctioned event without approval. He missed the preseason after he pleaded guilty in April to charges of illegal alcohol consumption and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Freshman Kelsey Barlow is expected to get extra minutes in his place.

Either Cal sucks or Syracuse is better than advertised. Either way, it's good news for me!

and Great news for Richmond! Go William and Mary, beat the hell out of Babs some more!

And in other news, California gets their asses kicked as Bab's season takes a turn for the worse.

AZ St. will win the Pac-10. What a value pick. Feelin' good. Who picked me to finish last? Go Sun Devils!

No no no no no

California and the rest of the Pac 10 will get pummeled by the other conferences but when it comes to conference play it will be California on top.

If there is a "value pick" it is Arizona.

Babblemur said...

Dayton over Georgia Tech ain't surprising, but Penn State beat by... who? That's embarrassing.

But Richmond's loss to William and Mary has got to take the cake.

Dayton hit a ridiculous number of threes to pull off that win, including some clutch threes late. Not taking anything away from them, but Tech will be fine.

Dear Anonymous:

Saw that article a couple of days ago. Purdue will still kick the shit out of every Big Ten team except Michigan State. Especially those Minnesota thugs.

Yours,

Turtle

Coaches V Cancer - North Carolina v. Syracuse. GO SYRACUSE!

Puerto Rico Semis:
Dayton (Jaybird) v. Villanova (Phun) = GREAT GAME to WATCH!
Kansas St (Jut) v. Ole Miss (Some Guy) = not as great game to watch (go mississippi!)

Charleston Classic: (yawn)

Paradise Jam starts today, lets see if Purdue can live up to their reputation.

I can see that my new strategy so far is no better than last year's. Last year my bottom three teams killed me. Really Oakland, really? Maybe they'll give the Cuse their second loss in a week or two, or surprise Kansas, but losing to one not really good team, and a marginal Wisconsin team are not good signs.

It should start to get interesting shortly with the tourney's, we'll find out quickly who the real value picks are,

Early analysis: There are some strong mid majors this year, stronger than the bottom tier of power conference teams

Kentucky is very talented, but still figuring it out

Kansas has it figured out

Carolina has a lot of tall dudes

Michigan State is vulnerable, as is Villanova

PAC-10 is not real good, could have a surprise team win that conference

Syracuse transfer Wesley Johnson made a good choice to get out of Iowa State

Bring on Feast week....

Hold on to your horses there pal:

1. All Big 10 teams should beat all Summit teams. Always. Except Iowa.

2. Even the best team this year - Kansas - had 8 losses last year. It wasn't like the national champ or contender returned with everyone, like UNC last year.

3. It will be interesting to see how Akaoni's theory of ONLY major conference squads pans out. At first glance, it looks like the second coming of Boaris's squad from last year. Lots of early points, but not so many once conference starts, and even less when large sums of points are distributed for conf champs and tourney champs. A squad like Baylor needs to essentially win 10 or more games that Oakland to end in a tie.

4. I suspect that Babs is feeling sick in his belly about his California pick. Maybe they too will start to win once they join the shitty Pac 10.

5. DePaul taking down N Iowa! Its already a better season for them then all of last.

6. Tennessee is having trouble scoring this year.

7. Ouch Penn State.

Well that was satisfying. 'Cuse looks good.

Syracuse looked DAMN good. Knocking off a Top 10 team and taking 2 for the Tournament is huge for Syracuse!

Cincy vs Syracuse revisited, it's early, but I think you all know what I'm thinking.....

Wow, the one other thing I'm shocked about is Oregon State, I was really looking hard at them, and thought they were going to have a good year in a mediocre pac-10, returning their core from an 18 win season last year. They are probably to this point, the biggest dissapointment out of every team that had high hopes for the year.

The god damn Pac 10 is god damn aweful! They might not even be a major conference this year.

And after looking into things, St Joes should not have beat Boston College this year. Those pigs bastards. St Joes is maybe 9th in the Atl 10.

it does set up a points vs player opportunity for you and I though Jutdog, with Northern Iowa facing off now against Boston College. Should be a solid matchup,

And what's up with Oklahoma, really...

Nice to see Utah St living up to its reputation along with Portland.

Big games today:
Mississippi (Some Guy) v. Villanova for the Paradise Jam Championship - if Ole Miss gets the win its 5 pts for knocking off a top 10 team plus the 3 pts for the tournament.

Also South Carolina (Akaoni) could take in the 2 boner pts for winning the Charleston Classic against Miami.

Note Akaoni is STILL UNDEFEATED in all his games so far!!! Hopefully pointing this out will curse him and he'll drop a game today. Maybe Baylor will lose to Div II (whothefuckever) and lose an extra 2 points.

I disagree with you Jutdog, with BC losing Rice, they are vulnerable at guard (Although with Trapini, etc, their front ct is pretty solid. St Joe's strength is it's guards, they have three averaging 12+ pts per game. Should be an interesting matchup for them today with Purdue who is missing their starting Pt guard. I'm smelling a potential upset here....

Jut the sage, K State looking like it could get it done against Dayton, in another surprise, Depaul looking really good against Tenn, South Carolina getting beat up by an undefeated Miami. We'll know in a few hours whether or not the CEO was right or wrong....
