Week 3 Recap: Boaris & Babs

Boaris & Babblemur both brought in 31 points a piece during week three to lead the field, putting Boaris back in first place and Babblemur in third right behind Musashisan. The CEO had the worst week, bringing home to his hungry family only 13 points, falling from 4th place at the beginning of the week to 9th place.

Boaris was carried by Oklahoma, who took the NIT on Friday beating Purdue and UAB earlier; Pittsburgh who knocked off Washington State and Belmont; and Kentucky went 3-0 including a win over West Virginia.

Babblemur picked up two tourney wins - Syracuse took the CBE over Florida and Kansas and San Diego State won the Great (sic) Alaska Shootout.

The CEO's poor performance can be chalked up to Siena going 0-3 with losses to both Tennessee and Oklahoma State; and losses by VCU, Middle Tenn State, and Mount St. Mary's. In fact, The CEO would have done even worse if he hadn't had the opportunity to play himself, assuring that at least one of his teams would win. The shareholders will be discussing The CEO's performance.

Tourney Totals:
Alaska: San Diego St. (Babblemur)
Anaheim: Wake Forest (Jutdog)

Puerto Rico: Xavier (Phunmunki)
NIT: Oklahoma (Boaris)
CVC: Duke (The CEO)

Team of the Week:
Wake Forest (Jutdog): 4-0, 11 points, wins over Baylor & UTEP.

Biggest Upset:
Dayton (Akaoni) over #15 Marquette (Jaybird)

Tennessee (Musashisan) lost to Gonzaga (Phunmunki)
Purdue (Akaoni) lost to Oklahoma (Boaris)

Michigan State (Babblemur) lost to Maryland

Best "Last Round" Pick:
Illinois State (ProgressMedia) - 3-0 this week, 11 points to date.

My thoughts on the weekend:

1. Louisville losing to Western Kentucky was satisfying.

2. The officiating in the Wake-Baylor game was a complete fucking joke. Baylor up 33-30 at the half. In the first 9 minutes of the second half, Baylor was called for 9 fouls to Wake's 3. During this same period, Wake was all over Baylor's ballhandlers, reaching in and causing turnovers (with no fouls called!). The result, Wake up 55-42, with Baylor's best big men on the bench in foul trouble. Wake looked good, but that was bullshit.

3. I still have faith in Cal State Northridge, bitches.

4. Enjoy the early leads while you can. Once conference play begins, they will disappear.

Ron said...

Ooh, Cal-Northridge lost again (bee-yatch).

Ooh, George Mason lost to -cough cough- Liberty.

Ooh, Morgan State lost to St. Francis

I guess a lot of losers can't wait for the safety of conference play.

Player v. Player games on ESPN tonight:

Akaoni has a chance to pick up big bonus points by beating Duke.

Jut has a chance to lose another game.

I like the Musa-Gunz double header - If Musa can win even one with St. Louis and Iowa it will be impressive, but with his luck so far he could win them both.

Go Purdue! Go Miami!

Wednesday I have three player v. player games with a good shot at winning all three:

Syracuse v. Cornell
West Virginia v. Old Miss
Michigan State v. North Carolina

Well, a good shot at winning two of them anyway.

CEO's efforts to keep job continue tonight by taking down a top 10 team. I was hoping the AP would drop Michigan State out and keep Purdue in. Thank you pollsters, it was just the lift I needed, well, that, and Mount St Mary's improving to 1-2 in head to head games last night. Not that I hate the big 10, but how cool would a Big East - ACC challenge have been this year? UNC - UConn, Duke - Pitts, Wake Forest - Lousiville (just so Jut couldn't get additional pts)....

CEO,

For some reason I predicted that you would finish 5th (after myself, of course). I think that your problem is that most of your teams suck. Don't feel bad though, you have company.

Examples:
Villanova: 6-0 but going to get creamed in the Big East.
Siena: they better win their conference
LSU: great start at 5-0, and I confess I was considering them for the SEC, but still untested, Troy is the best they have faced.
VCU: I like VCU. Too bad they have lost half their games.
I'll just stop there because it just goes downhill.

So I'm rooting for you in every game you have against Jaybird, Notaturtle, Jutdog, Boaris, Gunz, HippieD, Musashisan, and ProgressMedia because every game you win will deny them points.

TOP TEN TEAMS NOT PICKED:

Based on intense research and intuition, at this early point in the season I believe these are the best 10 teams that no one picked.

1. Illinois 6-0, with wins over Tulsa, Vanderbilt, and Kent State.
2. Michigan 5-1, with wins over UCLA and Northeastern.
3. Maryland 4-2, sure, two losses, but wins over Michigan State and Vermont.
4. Utah 4-1, with wins over Old Miss, Green Bay, and Morgan State.
5. Nebraska 5-0, with wins over Creighton and St. Louis
6. Seton Hall 5-1, with wins over USC and Virginia Tech
7. Arizona State 5-1, with wins over San Diego State and Charlotte
8. Western Kentucky 3-2, but with wins over Louisville and Southern Illinois.
9. Texas Tech 6-1, with a win over Mississippi St.
10. St. Johns 6-1, with a win over Cornell.

At this point I would trade Charlotte for any one of these teams.

Well,

The CEO got the corner office by seeing things other didn't. What you call sucky, the CEO will gladly take. Let's analyze your comments:

Villanova (a team that returns its top 9 from a team that went to the sweet 16 last year. Will they win the Big East, no, will they finish top 5 and return some nice points in the proces, yes).

Siena (I got nothing, you're right, they better win their conference)

LSU, agree, they haven't played anyone, but I'm good with that. They're very talented, get a key player back from injury (missed the whole year last year), and this slow start allows them to build the chemistry as a team and get used to a new coach's system. Anything less than a second place or SEC championship finish would be dissapointing. The other nice thing is that people for some reason kept drafting SEC West teams, so it's just bonus points for LSU when we get into conference play.

VCU, it has been up and down. I worry that they start slow. They closed every game they played to a tie or a lead, but get behind by double digits in just about every game in the first half. They'll be fine.

A quick survey of 7th and 8th picks show my two both are 1st or 2nd for most points delivered. Only Illinois State has delivered more out of one of those positions, and this is before it becomes cupcake city in their respective conferences. Mt St Mary's had Virginia Tech, beat at Tech before they fouled their way out of the game in the last 4 minutes blowing an 8 pt lead. They beat an American team last night who was favored to win their conference.

I'd be up for a side wager that when the dust settles, the CEO has more points than you.

-The CEO

You also missed Mercer, now 6-1, wins at Alabama and Auburn, had an 18 pt lead at Georgia Tech and blew it, won again tonight. They play a couple of people's teams coming up, so we'll see if they are for real or not.

Arizona State was picked in second or third round, they were the second Pac-10 team to get drafted.

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

You also left out Little Rock - a solid contender for conf and several nice early wins

Anonymous said...

You also left off a solid Missouri. South Carolina also returns everyone, but may not get it done in the long run.

It is very early though, and probably no teams were picked solely on their preseason schedule.

Anonymous said...

I think North Carolina may have been picked for preseason schedule :o)

Anonymous said...

Well.....one way to beat the CEO would be not giving him his bonus two pts for knocking off a top 10 team (it was even on a hostile court!!)

Justin Mitchell said...

Let's stop for a moment and recognize the importance of Ohio St's win over Miami - - - - My score is no longer doubled by Boaris!

Let's keep it rolling with another 4 point night tonight. I don't hold much hope for Cornell, but Temple best be winning.

Re. Wake's win over Baylor and their team of the week award from Babs, it is nice to see them doing so well without their starting point guard, who was a top assist leader in the ACC last year. I suspect they'll hit some road blocks, but by mid year, they'll be solid.

And finally, we're down to 3 teams that have netted ZERO points: Wright St, Western Michigan, and Cal St Northridge. All teams made my top 96 list, with Northridge at the top. Are players missing games on these teams or what?

Justin Mitchell said...

.. nothridge the highest ranking of the Zero netters.

Ron / Jut, CEO should be at 51, 5 pts for win over Purdue last night, not 3, Purdue ranked 10th in AP poll = 5 pts when win over another teams players top 10.

Thanks,

-CEO

Ron said...

CEO - got it, fixed it. Yup - Purdue is a Top 10 team. Jut updated that one, he must have been drinking.

Arizona State - Well I'm sure glad I picked them then!!! Ha Ha Ha! Maybe I was thinking Arizona. Or maybe I was drinking. Oh - I know, Arizona State beat two of my own teams, meaning I didn't get points for those wins. Best team someone else should have picked maybe...? (Or maybe I shouldn't have taken Charlotte or SD St.)

Jutdog is creepity creeping up on Turtle...

This is going to be a 13 point night for Babblemur, winning all his games, catapulting into first place. Too bad Arizona State isn't playing...

Anonymous said...

Nope to Miami win - the rest of the team picked up the game because bigheadMac was out playing boxer.

It might get even better if bigMac gets suspended for multiple games. I wasn't 100% confident with choosing Wake Forest over Miami with my #2 pick, but am starting to feel better about it.

That was my bad for the top 10 2pts. Didn't even think about it.

Go Lamar!

You know me, I need to be ahead of both of my brothers to be satisfied, those two points put me ahead of Jaybird, now I can function today...

-The CEO

Ron said...

I don't even want to watch this crapless MSU-NCSt game anymore.

North Carolina is hands down the best team in the NCAA, no questions. We all better hope that all the rest of Jaybird's teams lose as often as possible.

Ron said...

Despite that thrashing by North Carolina, I had a pretty good night - picked up 7 points, moved into second place, beat up on the cellar dwellers Jut and Turtle, all in a days work.

I was surprised by Gunz though - two big wins by his last two picks Old D and Miami-O.

Notaturtle has a BIG night tonight though:
UCLA vs. #8 Texas, at Texas...
Kent State hosts visiting St. Mary's
Cleveland State hosts visiting Butler

HippieD, Boaris and Akaoni also have some big opportunities to move it on up.
Go USC! Go Cleveland State!

You know, even though Butler lost everyone who mattered last year, the recruits they have brought in over the past 2 years have been solid 2 & 3 star players - well above most of the remaining conference teams.

That being said, I now believe UWGB can take the Horizon. Whooooo!

Saturday is a huge day for everyone. Lots of points in the air, easy for players to add 10-15 in one day. All of my teams play, and I see probably 70% of the teams play. Good to see the real season is starting, and I can begin the long climb to the top. I gave you all a nice head start, so it would be a little more enjoyable. Watch out mother fuckers.

Oh, and babs, can't you change the setting so you don't need to click Post Comment twice? Jaybird attempted posting, but stopped when it came back stating that his post couldn't be processed. Do you know what I'm talkin about?

~ Jut

Ron said...

Well there isn't a whole lot more that I can do - comments are unmoderated, open to anyone, etc.

So I took off the "word verification" thing - the last bastion of comment security. Maybe that will help, or maybe it will let a bunch of spam in.

Yes - Saturday is a big day. The standings could flip all over the place, other than Jut being in last place.

Best game this weekend - San Diego (Jut) vs. San Diego State (Babs). Grudge Match. Showdown. Whose da bitch? If I win, Jut will cry like a little baby with pink eye. If Jut wins, I will buy him a beer.

I love how all you guys are getting worked up right now! This is pretty similar to spring training, and when the season starts, we will see what happens to all your fancy ratings. CEO, pretty much no chance, My pick for owner of the year........JAYBIRD for the win

Yah I hope Alabama State is working for you Jaybird

Keep talking the trash. What I couldn't do to motivate my team, Ron did for me with his trash talking telling them the CEO was done. They responded by moving from 8th to 3rd (wow Purdue, top 10, really, on your home court OVERATED). Saturday will penalize me some, as I have no head to head matchups, but upcoming showdowns with Xavier (Duke), Texas (Nova), are some good opportunities. Keep talking, keep talking, keep talking. Like Jut, I think my team will shine as conference play starts (thank you to all of you who took the weak ass ACC, SEC, and Big East teams). Really, is the 7th best team in the SEC or Big East going to be the same as Sieana, or VCU at the end of the year when those two win their conferences and get their NCAA bids. So yes, the Iowas, Vanderbilts, Mississippi States, Boston Colleges, Georgetowns, Oklahoma States, etc have beat up some small schools and got you some points. I will be generous one more time myself, my 8th team, mighty Boston University will play Notre Dame next week. It is my last gift....

I like the match-up for Ohio St - might be back to back wins over leading-scorer-less rated teams, as Harongoat is likely out.

I would expect San Diego (pick 52) to top San Diego St (pick 63).

Navy coming in at 7-1 and receiving an AP vote. Penn St and Texas Tech at 7-1 each playing no one. Mercer at 6-2 with wins over Baba and Auburn and losses to Georgia Tech in OT and to Dayton. Utah at 5-1 with wins over Morgan St, UWGB, Mississippi, and Oregon.

Ron said...

Saturday's big winners:
Babblemur: 4-0 for 12 points
Jutdog: 5-2 for 9 points
Notaturtle: 4-2 for 8 points

Big loser: Phunmunki lost all three player v. player games, could have had a 12 point day.

Ron said...

Oklahoma over Tulsa really hurt. It was to be expected, but I really could have used that win.

Anonymous said...

Ron,

I need you to talk some more trash on Saturday. Your silence lead to a painful day for the CEO. Nice week for you though. Overall, the league is starting to tighten up, that's good, should make for some interesting discussion weaves. Any early predictions for the Nova - Texas showdown on Tuesday?

CEO -

Your players are ugly. I mean, really really ugly.

Elephant Man ugly.

Good luck!

Anonymous said...

Today, I will officially have more points than at least one other player!

Also, I finished most of the scheduling for Jut, Jaybird, CEO, and HIppieD through mid/end of January.

I failed to consider the scare factor. Ugliness reduces Texas win to 11 points.

I sure hope Duke recovers and remains in the top 10 by the time Wake Forest destroys them. I unfortunately will not be receiving the top 10 bonus when Ohio St destroys Michigan St.

~ Jut

McGrumps said...

Whatever, my teams have lost more games in the closing minute than any teams ever in the history of everything. Luckily those losses will build the character my teams need to destroy Jut as the season progresses.

Ron said...

"my teams have lost more games..."

stop there.

You just have too many cracker jacks right now but you will do better in conference play I'm sure.

Go Lamar! Go San Jose State!

I'm hoping Nova can execute like last year. I don't remember it, but they beat Texas by double digits last year. Then again, Wisconson beat Texas last year too. I'm going Nova in the upset (surprise) by 5. I'm looking forward to the guard matchups.

Too bad this isn't a dynasty league, Nova just signed two 5 star recruits, including the Big East's best pro prospect for next years incoming class all of which won't help me unless I draft them again next year.

I'm just hoping Xavier can make it to number 10 by the time Duke plays them.

Ron, thanks for the trash, what started so promising last week fell apart on Saturday and allowed the J-Bird to move back ahead of me.

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

You know, I'd like to discuss ideas for improving the league, including ideas such as "maintaining the rights" to two teams for the following year. New players are granted 1 extra 1st and 3rd round pick. We would want to include a deadline date to allow for some sort of gamble.

By doing this, we may be lowering our participant numbers to 8 or so as some people may not be interested in participating and it is a tough sell to someone new when you tell them they can't have UNC, UCONN, etc, but may be able to take Baylor.

The other notion then is that next year's draft order reflects the opposite finishing order of the previous year - first place drafts last in first round, with any newbees incorporated either by drawing a slot or by specific designation.

~ Jut

McGrumps said...

Wow, you've already thrown in the towel and are looking to revamp the rules? C'mon, Jut, we've got these suckers right where we want 'em.

Anonymous said...

on your comment Jut, the way we do it in our fantasy league is you can keep a player up to two three years and then they are eligible for draft again.

In this case, the interesting thing with the January draft is that by then the next years class has generally signed letter of intent (not that Arizona has anything to say able execution of that intent). Just throwing it out there....

Anonymous said...

I've been a secret fan of keeping teams from year to year. Each new season "continuing" players can place a "lock" on X number of teams, the other teams can be poached by new players.

I considered my squad from last year when making my picks this year. In other words, I stayed far away from those teams!

Babs
