Week Two Recap: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Week Two is really like the first "real" week, and the pace setters were Phunmunki, Musashisan, The CEO and Boaris.

The Good:

Phunmunki, who celebrated her birthday on Sunday, brought in the most points this week carried by Xavier's remarkable championship in Puerto Rico. They beat a tough Missouri, then beat Boaris' Virginia Tech with a half court buzzer beater, followed by a close win over Gunz' Memphis to take the Puerto Rico Classic. Also for Phunmunki Wisconsin played themselves into the Paradise Jam Finals to be played Monday, and BYU went 3-0 in one of those Basketball Travelers things.

Musashisan drove into first place with 22 points, spread over his entire 8 team force. He also carries the best overall record at 24-2. Tennessee and Clemson took 4 pts each, Iowa, Florida State and St. Louis took 3 pts each.

The CEO was carried by Duke who won the Coaches Versus Cancer Classic, taking down Southern Ill (Gunz) and Michigan to do it. Siena's defeat of Cornell added some points and made up for Mid. Tenn. St and Mt. St. Mary's losses. The CEO finished the week in fourth place.

Boaris, who started the week in first, fell to second place. Pittsburgh and Oklahoma brought home some points, but frankly not a lot of games for Boaris this week. Virginia Tech got shot down in Puerto Rico, Kentucky got smeared by North Carolina, etc.

The Bad:

Gunz choked hard on a pretzel. He lost seven games, including every head to head game against another player he had, won eight games total for the week. Southern Illinois got the double smack down from Duke and UCLA. Memphis lost to Xavier in the Puerto Rico finals, BC lost to St. Louis, etc. Bad.

Jutdog held down last place all week, with the bottom half of his teams losing game after game. San Diego showed some promise, and Louisville, Wake, and OSU have barely started, but until something changes Jut holds onto Cellar Dweller for the Second Week Straight.

Babblemur, however, shouldn't be talkin, given a lackluster week against other players and no significant wins. Charlotte, San Diego State and Tulsa all failed to upset this week.

The Ugly:
  • Green Bay (Jutdog) losing to Rollins (Div. II)
  • Alabama State (Jaybird) three losses in one week
  • Arkansas (Gunz) loss to Missouri State
  • Morgan State (ProgressMedia) three losses in one week (plus 2 wins)
  • Western Michigan (HippieD) still sucks from last week
Standings after week two (ending 11/23):
  • 1. Musashisan (24-2) - 32
  • 2. Boaris (19-5) - 31
  • 3. Phunmunki (21-4) - 30
  • 4. The CEO (20-4) - 28
  • 5. HippieD (20-9) - 26
  • 6. Akaoni (19-6) - 23
  • 7. Jaybird (17-6) - 23
  • 8. Notaturtle (15-7) - 21
  • 9. Babblemur (16-5) - 20
  • 10. ProgressMedia (16-8) - 20
  • 11. Gunz (17-8) - 19
  • 12. Jutdog (13-7) - 15

New AP poll out today - some shifting should occur with Xavier bouncing way up, UCLA & Memphis falling, and Duke rising.

At the end of the week, the first BRI comes out. The only thing certain about the Nov index is that it does not reflect the post season index - just like my current standing.

Today's Quality Matchups:
Syracuse Vs Florida - both 3-0

UCONN Vs Wisconsin - both 4-0 and top 25

San Diego Vs Miami - SD has had plenty of chances already this year to prove themselves - it doesn't look any better against Miami.

Miami OH vs Wright St - both need a win badly

UNLV Vs UTEP - both undefeated

Kansas Vs Washington - Both need a game like this to prove their worth

Oregon Vs Alabama - Bama needs a win, period.

Cal St Northridge and New Mexico - both off to a rough start

I'll have to admit, I'm pretty down on my teams right now.

UCLA loss to Michigan hurt.
Northridge loss to Bakersfield doesn't bode will for the Matadors.
Mississippi loss to Utah after Utah lost to SW Baptist. Ouch.

That said, as we saw last year, it's not how you start, it's how you finish.

Wow, Miami sure kicked the crap out of San Diego.

Syracuse over Florida - THAT was a nice piece of work last night.

Syracuse over Kansas tonight - THAT will be very very nice.

I agree that D2 Rollins would have put up a better show than San Diego. I guess the positive is that it only gets better from here.

HippieD taking the PJam and 6 points with a win over Wisconsin

I guess my recommendation to Jaybird to take Alabama seems to be neutralizing my recommendation to take UAB, as Baba drops a big loss to a young and not so good Oregon. I guess Oregon has a chance to prove themselves against UNC tonight. UNC by 19.

Texas V Notredame - Biggest game of the year so far - Texas by 9.

Wright St is 0-3. Cal St Northridge is off the top 25 mid-major list. Belmont has the chance tonight to re-create the finish to their loss to Duke by putting away Pitt. Pitt by 23.

Granted no one knows who Wake Forest has played in their 3 opening games, but they are averaging a 36 point win margin and 92 pts per game.

Kansas looked good last night - better than I had thought they could or would.

California is 4-0. Last time that happened was probably with Jason Kidd. Oregon St is 0-3. Last time that happened... well... every year.

Creighton V Arkansas LR. We'll see how good A.LR really is here. Both teams 3-0.

I suspect that I'll be spending this week and maybe even next maintaining a firm last place. We'll also see how valuable preseason is Vs regular season, as I suspect that I'll dominate then. Too little too late? I don't think so. Especially against you chumps.

CEO had a great chance to step up tonight, and all he did was dissapoint his investors. VCU loses in OT, and in a chance to step up, MT St Mary's hangs close, but once again proves to just be a bridesmaid. Those are wins those teams needed for their resumes. I could cry.

Villanova continues to beat up on nobodies, much like Wake Forest.

Boston U hanging on to a lead half way through second half in another head to head matchup. If they can get it done, I guess tonight is still a win.

Texas looked good except their D on McIneary (or however you spell it). Yes, he's fast, no he should never be left wide open for three.

UNC / Notre Dame should be a war...

It should be noted too that coming into play today, the CEO had played 25 games, more than only Jut at 24 games. HippieD leads all with 32 games played, followed by Akaoni with 29. I guess Jut can deduce that means he's trailing because he hasn't had as many ops....

Syracuse over Kansas - YES!

Notre Dame over Texas - I think that shows that Notre Dame is for real, and the Big East is going to be a monster of a conference this year. Blood will be shed.

I fell asleep at 9 last night and missed watching all these games. :(

NIT semis start tonight on top of the big NC-ND showdown - Purdue (Akaoni), Oklahoma (Boaris), Boston College (Gunz) and UAB (Jaybird) playing it out for the NIT crown (4 pts). As Purdue is ranked #10 that should put a big mark on their head - and should be a good test for them.
