Most under rated player: Phunmunki

Her teams are rock solid.

Most over rated player: Notaturtle

Good squad, but not that good.

Game of the week:
San Diego (Jut) vs. UNLV (HippieD)

San Diego has had a quiet "hype" about them, the ugly step-sister of the WCC. They get their chance to prove themselves here at UNLV, a team that hovers around the end of the Top 25. If San Diego spanks UNLV we'll know they are legit and Jutdog gets a big boost.

Just for that I rescind my pick of Charlotte as one of the best picks of the draft. Please remove them from the list, Jut.

No do-overs!

I'm just sayin, notaturtle, that I placed you more accurately around sixth. So you are over rated. If Cleveland State beats Washington, Kent State beats St. Louis, and Cal-Northridge beats Standford, I'll stand corrected.

Hey another story:

First rounds of the Coaches vs. Cancer tourney start this week for the dummy rounds. Final 4 face off Nov. 20 and 21, but these teams are involved:

Duke (The CEO)
Southern Illinois (Gunz)
Northeastern (Jaybird)
UCLA (Turtle) and Miami-Ohio (Gunz) in the same bracket, could face off on Thursday. The winner on the 21st gets 4 points.

The way I see it, only Musas and Gunz are out for sure. Everyone else has a shot:

Boaris's Pitt and Oklahoma could live up to some of the predictions, and be elite 8 teams.

HippieD's UCONN could make the final, and beat the hell out of lots of Big East teams

I like Texas and would have taken them 4th had Louisville not been taken. So, Texas could be a final 4 team, and strong points should be earned from mid majors Morgan St, American, and St Marys.

Phunmunki will try to do what I did last year, and win with lots of non-top teams. The only difference is I had THE top team, and she doesn't have any possibility.

Akaoni's Purdue and Florida are both outside chances for Elite 8 and stronger contenders for major conf champs. Nothing stands out with his supporting cast, but none of them are particularly weak either.

I think the CEO is a better version of Phunmunki, with a better top team who should earn far more points playing in the ACC. My pick of Butler very early paid off, as should his pick of Sienna. I don't think he's got the balls to take it though.

Babb's late snag of an impressive Syracuse team was topped when he snagged West Virginia late. Add what I see as the top Big 10 team and he's got a solid upper-middle class finish.

Notaturtle - if freshman can deliver, UCLA will deliver, and turtleater will be a top finisher. I think Baylor in round 3 and Northridge in round 7 are two of the better picks in the league. No chance Turtle finished top 2.

Jaybird has the best balance in the league, with a super-strong top team, several top contenders in major leagues, and a few very good minor leaguers. The only weakness in his lineup is the likelihood that he only has 1 sweet 16 team, maybe two if Marquette can finally get over the hump.

For me, I really like Louisville, and believe they will make the final 4 and take the Big East. I think Wake Forest and Ohio St start slowly, and both finish with strong performances in the post season. I think Wake Forest can make the elite 8, again if freshman matter. Temple's stock continued rising as hoards of Atl 10 teams were selected, and the remaining teams are all solid 25 - 30 pt performers. I can't imagine finishing lower than 4th.

So, if Musas and Gunz are out, and HippieD and Boaris are predicted 9 and 10, what were the worst picks per round of the top players (which teams should score the least):

Rnd: Team
1. Gonzaga - Phunmunki
2. Davidson - ProgressMed
3. TexasA&M - Akaoni
4. Kent St - Notaturtle
5. Vanderbilt - ProgressMed

Rounds 6-8 are rather difficult to say, but a guess would be:

6. Mississippi - Notaturtle
7. Tulsa - Babblemur
8. Ill St - ProgressMed

I can't believe neither Arkansas (picked last in the SEC) or Iowa (picked 2nd to last in the Big 10) made your list, Jut Dog. Otherwise, I think your post was solid.

Regarding Ron's notation of San Diego vs UNLV, I like UNLV as a sleeper great 8 team, a lot of talent returning, really wanted to get them with my third pick, Hippie made a great pick there. Not that I don't like San Diego, I just think UNLV will be special this year.

It really is wide open this year though, you could argue that North Carolina and Louisville are final 4teams, but then who, Texas, UConn, UCLA, DUKE. With it being wide open, it gives most of the teams a shot to contend this year.

The eval of lowest pt earners left out the teams of the last 4 players, who would have dominated the list. For reference, check the "worst picks" section of the initial post.

Kent State returns eight players, including three starting guards (and the MAC player of the year), from a 28-7 team that went to the NCAA tournament.

If Mississippi gets any production out of their talented newcomers up front, they should win the SEC West. As it is, they'll probably finish second or third and make the tournament.

How can Mississippi be on the list, but not Vanderbilt, who was picked 13 spots higher and is generally considered an NIT team?

Collison will take UCLA to the finals and will be creating easy shots for all the athletic freshman (and they do have some experienced players returning). Three of my four mid-majors are nearly unanimously considered locks to win their conferences, with UTEP being the only question-mark.

Arizona State at 15 was WEAK. They'll finish fourth or fifth in a down Pac 10.

McGrumps said...

Also, wondering whether UCLA's freshmen will show up to play is pretty weak. This isn't like wondering if any of Wisonsin's incoming class will develop into legitimate players. Jrue and Drew could have easily gone pro if it weren't for the new rule. Everyone should be scared to play against UCLA.

Ron said...

Well I have to confess that UCLA looks pretty damn scary, I would have selected them myself. Arizona State won't stand a chance against them, but you have to admit that the Sun Devils ain't half bad either.

More coaches v. cancer action tonight:
Duke (The CEO) v. Georgia Southern
Northeastern (Jaybird) v. IUPUI
Southern Illinois (Gunz) v. division II California, PA

Southern Ill won't get a point if they win, but they lose 2 if they lose.

Listen, you crazy bastard, I picked you for third. Vandy was on the list as a shitty pick.

I think freshman should do fine - as demonstrated by my second pick of Wake Forest and third pick of Ohio St. But, it can be a gamble, with the potential for freshman to play, well, like freshman. Overall, I think all three teams will be very strong come Feb/Mar.

Go Georgia Southern!!

Go California PA!!!

Northeastern gets a chance to get a quality road win at Michigan tomorrow night for Jaybird. Looks like Duke is making up for their off night on Monday tonight.

That being said Jut, it doesn't look like the spreadsheet gave Jaybird his one pt for Northeastern's win yet

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

Yeah you have to give us until the next morning to update spreadsheets and web page due to children interference and alcohol.

Anonymous said...

You've been spoiled for now. When lots of games are happening, and there is business to do, you're lucky if the games are updated twice per week.

Babs, since the CEO apparantly has extra time, why not invite his crooked ass too

Ron said...

Ah ha ha! Yeah, there were a few stretches last year where we went a few days without updates, but for the most part we kept up. With 2 of us working at it that should help, but maybe we will up it to 3. Someone without children or alcohol or a job.

Gunz gets his first shots out tonight when Southern Ill faces off against the "Best Team No One Drafted" UMASS in the Coaches Cancer Classic, plus his Miami-Ohio team plays Weber State to earn the right to lose to Notaturtle's UCLA tomorrow. (If Miami-ohio beats UCLA though, that is a big ole five point win against a top 10 team...)

UCLA plays Prairie View tonight (it is on ESPNU so I'm gonna try to watch it.) and Northeastern v. Michigan will be interesting.

Babs,

Instead of sending out an email update, why not just post it here?

okay.
