Week Two - NIT, CVC, Puerto Rico and Paradise

Okay, the third week has better tournaments, but we got some tourney action this week that should be interesting.

Monday & Tuesday are the first rounds of the NIT, with the Final Four next week. Seeing action in the NIT are:
Boston College (Gunz) & Cornell (Jutdog) will meet Tues if both win on Monday
Purdue (Akaoni)
Oklahoma (Boaris) & Davidson (ProgressMedia) will meet Tues if both win on Monday
Arizona (ProgressMedia) & UAB (Jaybird) will meet Tues if both win on Monday

Coaches vs. Cancer (Nov. 20-21)
Duke (CEO) v. Southern Illinois (Gunz)
UCLA (Notaturtle) v. Michigan ( - )

Likely to be a UCLA v. Duke show down on Friday, don't miss that one.

Puerto Rico Tip-off (Nov. 20-23)
Virginia Tech (Boaris) & Xavier (Phunmunki) will face off Friday if both win on Thursday
Memphis (Gunz) & USC (HippieD) will face off Friday if both win on Thursday
Finale on Sunday

Paradise Jam (Nov 21-24)
Miami (FL) (Notaturtle) & UCONN (HippieD) will face off Saturday if both win on Friday
San Diego (Jutdog) & Wisconsin (Phunmunki) will face off Saturday if both win on Friday
Finale on Monday the 24th.

Other GREAT games this week:
  • Monday, Boaris' Pittsburgh takes on Gunz Miami-Ohio, maybe for first place. Pitt will likely still be a top 10 team, meaning Gunz could take home 5 points if they pull off the upset.
  • Tuesday, North Carolina (Jaybird) v. Kentucky (Boaris) - Kentucky already tasted defeat, can they taste victory? 5 points if they do.
  • Saturday, Cornell (Jutdog) v. Siena (The CEO) - Aren't you just curious how good these two teams might actually be since they are virtual locks to win their respective conferences?

I'm predicting HippieD and Notaturtle to be in the lead after this week. Turtle based on ULCA defeating Duke for the Coaches Classic, and HippieD's UCONN taking the Paradise Jam, along with USC having a good showing in the Puerto Rico thing.

Also - potentially hot game Tuesday between Davidson and Oklahoma

Can I change my best pick of the league to Progress pick of Illinois State. They have a game coming up against Alabama State that could move them to 2-0 and 6 pts already, not bad for the 90th something pick.

Looking forward to the UCLA - Duke game, really good preview of how good those teams are.

Last year Davidson was a solid pick, considering their dominance in conf and run in the tourney. Remember that they started out something like 2-6, losing most of their preseason games.

Don't get too jumpy there with a 6 pt start buddy.

Oakland taking down Oregon last night.

Ron said...

NotaTurtle is the last undefeated player at 6-0. They have five games today though,,,good luck buddy.

Does anyone else beside me revel in the fact that Jutdog has the worst record and is feeding off the bottom of the charts? What does he have up today...

Stephen F. Austin vs. Texas A&M? HA!
San Diego vs. Nevada? Good Luck!
Green Bay vs. Utah? Well they are returning five starters...
Cornell vs. Loyola (MD)? Good luck!

Kent State by 40! I fully expect to have two loses after tonight: Northridge and Cleveland State are both 10 point underdogs. I'll be irritated if Ole Miss loses.

Nominees for worst loss so far:
Washington losing to Portland
Kentucky losing to VMI
Alabama losing to Mercer
Western Michigan losing every game
(Utah losing to SW Baptist would be the clear choice, but no one took Utah this year).

I think it's a good idea to address one's trash talk too a specific individual. Sure, Babs is the obvious target. But it's still nice to see to whom insults are addressed (Bab's idiocy notwithstanding) (is that a dangling participle?) (Also, are multiple parenthetical asides allowed) (in proper grammar, I mean).

Actually, the idiot comment was clearly meant for Jut. While there are several "idiot" players, only Jut is additionally a "moron".

Here is what is scary about Boaris: Besides pulling a strong lead, he's sitting on 3 head to head games tonight, two of which he might win, six more points. I guess it is good that he is packing in points now since he will likely get creamed later.

akaoni said...

See, just call a moron a moron and it makes life easier for those of us who only check in occasionally to follow the dialogue.

Baylor is beating the crap out of the Gentlemen. One down, four to go.

Last year Davidson was 2-6.....? Huh? Did anyone pick them? Do you know they lost at UNC, at Duke, at UCLA? Do you remember they had UCLA down 14 at half but blew it? Do you know who you're talking to? The CEO has almost all mid majors following the Davidson model. But let's make one thing clear, if Illinois State beats Alabama state, they'll have played 2 games and delivered 6 pts, for someone's last pick!!! Some of the last picks in this league have delivered negative pts.

Pitts crushes Miami of Ohio. Ron, you still thinking UCLA walks away with the coaches vs cancer?

Boaris off to a huge lead, like 6-0 now against other players. I'd say congrats, but looking at some of the teams that were drafted and have gone heads up against Boaris, yikes.

Davidson looking good tonight, but so is Freshman guard for Oklahoma. If they can find a fourth wheel they may be alright.

CEO:

Yes, I still think UCLA will take the Coaches Cancer Classic.

I agree, the first few weeks are a distorted portion of the schedule. Mid Majors like Davidson, Miami-Ohio, San Diego and Green Bay are going to get pounded by good teams, just like Kentucky got pounded by North Carolina tonight. But those mid-majors are going to be better for it, and go back to their conferences and kick some ass. Except for Kentucky, because they suck, and they are not a mid-major.

Curry looked good, forty thousand points.

The leader board will be changing frequently now I expect.

akaoni said...

I've risen from the cellar to 5th place due to a couple of my sucky teams beating some other squad's sucky teams. Ah, this is truly a game of skill. That being the case I predict that this is the closest to the top I'll be all year.

It's been a great 1 day ride, but the rush has to end sometime...

...Jut's ride at the back of the short bus appears to be the exception to the above rule, however.

Ron said...

If there were negative points, Jut would have them.

Justin Mitchell said...

You might as well add the AP top 25 below the BRI, as it's relevant for the bonus - now that it will fit with this new format.

Justin Mitchell said...

I see Xavier pulled it out - tough game - I think Missouri is a top 10 team not selected. Michigan was also on my list of top 96, so we'll see how they fair tonight against LA.

Charlotte may be a thorn in your fat gut, huh?

Ron said...

I think Rhode Island may belong on the top 10 not picked list. Possibly Virginia Military Institute as well.

Justin Mitchell said...

Finally some upsets:

USC going down to Seton Hall
UCLA going down to Michigan

Next up tonight: Syracuse? Memphis?

akaoni said...

VMI? Why because they ran the score up against a small no-name college?

Ron said...

Well that and VMI beating Kentucky at Kentucky. That was pretty good of them

McGrumps said...

UCLA is going to have a long year if they can't figure out how to attack a zone. They looked lost at times, and Collison looked lackadaisical at the end when he needed to step up. I blame the loss mostly on Howland. It was a freaking 1-3-1 zone, not some brilliant innovation they haven't seen before.

That said, Collison was blatantly hacked on his final shot, and should of gone to the line with a chance to tie the game. That was a bullshit no-call.

akaoni said...

Hmmm...maybe I underestimated VMI. They do appear to know how to score.

akaoni said...

also, I appear to have underestimated the power and glory of my team. That said, I maintain that it will be all downhill from here.

McGrumps said...

It will be all downhill for your fantasy football team, too, beginning this weekend.

Justin Mitchell said...

Babs, why don't you move the pick # column either directly before or after the team or after the conf. There is still room for the additional lock. It tends to get jumbled between the numbers as it is right now.

I would do it, but it seems to take my system so long.

GO MICHIGAN!

Anonymous said...

Michigan costs the CEO 5 pts. You see, yes, UCLA has gone to three straight final fours, because College Hoops is the opposite of the pros. All of the College power is on the East Coast between Big East, ACC, SEC, and one could argue big ten (didn't get an Illinois final from last night, but if the won, the Big 10 is undefeated I believe so far this year). Maybe UNLV, Gonzaga, or Arizona State can Challenge for number one seed this year out there.

I have to Ask Ron, can UCLA win the consolation game?

-The CEO

akaoni said...

My fantasy football team has been an underperformer all year.

[FWIW here's my starting line up for those not in the know who might be interested:

QB: D. Brees NO
RB: A. Peterson Min
RB: L. Tomlinson SD (via. trade for M. Turner +)
WR: A. Johnson Hou
WR: B. Marshall Den
TE: A. Fasano Mia
K: M. Bryant TB
DST: Minnesota

My record this season 5-6!]

This week however, I think I may have just enough gas to sweep the you for the season bro. Too bad I'll be in NM and won't be able to gloat about the season sweep.

My team for this competition however does indeed suck.

McGrumps said...

Give UCLA two months, and they'll be crushing people. Just having some growing pains. Jrue looked good last night. The other frosh, not so great.

Also, I underestimated Michigan. I think they'll beat Duke.

Anonymous said...

I have to admit, I am a huge Carolina fan, I bleed baby blue, and probably hate Duke more than anyone. However, when it comes to competition, you must bury that and choose wisely. I can see now that many other share my disdain of the boys from Durham, but let's get realistic, they lost no one, they have some talented freshman, the 7 footer actually contributes this year, Singler added 15 lbs of muscle and Henderson finally showed up. This is a scary good team. Southern Illinois will be very good this year, and they played them tough, held both Singler and Henderson scoreless in the first half, they just ran out of gas in the second half. Duke can just keep running bodies out on the court, and they all seem to execute. I remember watching the Duke Carolina game last year, the one Carolina lost. Paulus, who I hate more than anyone was starting then, and hit 8 of 10 threes. He comes off the bench now. Yes, Michigan is getting better, yes, they played a good game last night, no, they don't stand a chance tonight, they're just out classed.

-The CEO

Justin Mitchell said...

Duke lost their leading scorer from last year - much like Texas. Still great players, but don't ignore reality.

Take that V Tech.

Justin Mitchell said...

if uwgb keeps this shit up, out with coach K. The team is loaded - enough talent to realistically contend for the Horizon. They have experience, some depth, and every important componant back from a quality team last year - plus add in athletic transfer Chop Tang and they are a contender. Sure, one important starter is out, but a pending route by D2 Rollins?

Its taken several years to get to this point, and it really isn't going to be better next year. If he can't get it done now, its not happening.

I'm pissed. They better come back and win this shit.

Friday night.

Phunmunki's Xavier slowed Boaris down by knocking off Virginia Tech in Puerto Rico, props to her.

Musashisan continues his drive up the charts winning three more games putting him in second place with a 19-2 record, best in the League.

The CEO shoots to third carried by Duke's defeat of Michigan winning the Coaches v. Cancer Classic. He would have had 4 more points if he would have beaten UCLA instead.

ProgressMedia's Illinois State is looking like the best 8th Round Pick yet - 2-0 with 2 wins against other players patsies.

And finally, losing to a Div. II team is now called "Jut's Rule". I'll give him some sympathy since UWGB was his 8th pick, but the loss wiped away his two wins.

Jut with some big games today, I missed the Wisconsin - San Diego matchup when looking at Bucky's schedule. A good early test for Bucky, I look for a close game.

Siena - Cornell, should also be a good game. I would like to say Siena is more talented, but Cornell could outsmart them on the court. Hoping Siena stays focused on this game and not their looming showdown with Tennessee.

Glad to see someone agrees with me on Illinois State being a great 8th round pick (note the CEO took some heat on making this call several days ago)

Let me throw this one to all you hoops afficiando's: UAB, a good win at Arizona, albeit the end of the game was strange. Do they have enough fire power to get by Memphis this year? If yes, as a 5th round pick, Jaybird really made a nice pick.

Agree with Jut's assessment, UWGB was on my watch list and wow, what happened. Very dissapointing.

Boaris, I'm coming after you, it's been to long since I've seen the top of this league

-The CEO

Justin Mitchell said...

We all know what Boaris will do - be the top rated player, have a good team, and get drunk and not be able to play - Milwaukee's Best too!

Badgers didn't have San Diego on the schedule because it was a tourney, and they played the winner of San Diego Valpo.

These are the shitty games - do you want your BabbleTeam to win or the Badgers.... we'll.... since I know I'll be winning by more than 2 points.... Go Bucky. Fuck you Iowa.

Justin Mitchell said...

Babs, I see you found your old comfortable home again... you were lost for a while up in the middle of the pack. Good to see you made it home.

Anonymous said...

I was watching scores last night and saw Stephen F Austin was down 45-9 at halftime to Baylor. I thne realized it was the women's score........you're lucky Jut

Mighty Mighty Mercer, are they one of the best teams not drafted. They are 3-0, with a relatively boring win over Piedmont, which they followed up by knocking off Alabama and Auburn. Today, they are leading Georgia Tech by 16. Upcoming games include: Dayton, Oklahoma State, and UCLA. Go Bears!!!!!

Rhode Island gets their second chance to knock off the CEO today, I'm hoping the coaches kid isn't 8 of 10 from three or this time I think I'm in trouble.

-The CEO

Justin Mitchell said...

Badgers appear to play San Diego tomorrow, along with Uconn and Miami.

No comment from CEO on Boaris the boozer reference?

I hear u'r doing Cmass this year for the xtended fam - good work buddy

Ron said...

Jut your mocking seems somehow hollow when you are below me. "Hello down there! Can you hear me"

This is a slow week for me. Next week:
Michigan State in the Old Spice Classic
Arizona State (and Charlotte) in the Anaheim 76 Classic
San Diego State in the Great Alaska Shootout (the only team in the shootout I think)
Syracuse in the CBE

That's 4 tourneys I'm in a good spot for.

Anonymous said...

Wow, I guess I only have to post something to jinx outcome. Mercer blows 18 pt second half lead, now in OT with Georgia Tech.....

CMass? I thought K9 was insisting on CVille..

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

Okay, Rhode Island followed up Duke game with another good showing taking down VCU. They should make some noise in the Atlantic 10, and as noted by Ron, could be a top 10 not picked team!!!

Jut, thoughts on the @$$ kicking Siena put on Cornell?

-The CEO

Justin Mitchell said...

Your 3rd pick Vs. my 7th pick? Had you not kicked my ass, your outlook might not even be top 5.

For example, Cornell Vs Mt St Marys and I suspect you get destroyed. Same with Ohio St vs Siena.

I do like seeing Jay's Alabama St starting out 0-3, New Mexico falling to UCF, Horizon League teams dropping like poop, and Marquette dropping a hundy.

Two teams that I also had in the top 96 were Cincinnatti and Arkansas LR. Both are off to an early 3-0.

Anonymous said...

I think Mr St Marys vs Cornell is a better match up than you think. Ohio State's big guy looks pretty good, they may be better than I thought. Actually, the whole big ten continues to represent well out of conrerence. USC loses again, and UWGB puts two back to back wins together.

-The CEO

Ron said...

Miami vs UCONN tonight is a big game. If Miami knocks off #2 UCONN NotaTurtle goes home with 5 points with the possibility of 6 more on Monday in the Paradise Jam Final vs. Wisconsin or San Diego.
