Week Two Preview (Top 10 Showdown)

Games and points pick up during week two, as a handful of those early tournaments get started (see this post for week two's tournament lineups) and some fantastic head-to-head games are presented for our entertainment.

Some of the best head to heads this week:

Monday

Ohio (Babblemur) vs. Oakland (McGrumps) face off in a good mid-major v. minor contest.

Tuesday

Kansas State (Boaris) vs. Virginia Tech (Mad Mader) - Just how good is #3 Kansas State? How good is #22 Virginia Tech?

#4 Ohio State (Slake B) vs. #9 Florida (Mooseye) - another great major battle, Ohio State and Florida are both considered leaders in their conferences, this game will be a big test for both of them. The momentum from a win here will be big.

#11 Gonzaga (The CEO) vs. #25 San Diego State (Babblemur) - pitting the reigning mid-major monsters versus the up and coming mid-major hot shots. Gonzaga was one of the few teams willing to play the Aztecs, and the Aztecs were one of the few teams willing to play at Gonzaga. This one better be on TV.

Butler (Akaoni) vs. Louisville (Boaris) - Butler gets a chance to earn their stripes early with a win over a Big East squad that isn't Fordham. They need the practice before facing Duke, Xavier and Stanford in December.

Wednesday

BYU (Jutdog) vs. Utah State (Boaris) - Grudge Match! Boaris' Utah State just knocked out Jut's Weber St last week, but can they handle JIMMER? JIMMER! This game is hot Mormon on Mormon action and might even be worth pay-per-view.

And these are on top of some potential beauties in the Tournaments. Dream matchups:
  • All four CVC games will be good: #13 Illinois (SGII) vs. Texas (Jut), #5 Pitt (Jaybird) vs. Maryland (Slake B)
  • Puerto Rico - show me North Carolina (Jut) vs. West Virginia (Slake B)
  • Charleston - how about George Mason (SGII) vs. Wofford (CEO)
  • Paradise Jam - Iowa (Musashisan) vs. Long Beach St (Musashisan) = championship round or consolation bracket?
  • NIT - #6 Villanova (Akaoni) vs. #24 Tennessee (Boaris) will it happen?

Well Oakland is proving to be a worthy investment. Not so much for Ohio.

Is anyone following the 24 hours of college basketball?

I tried to stay up for the Memphis game, but couldn't keep my eyes opened. They were playing like crap, so I was pleasantly surprised to wake up with them getting a win, and a St. Mary's win to boot.

McGrumps 2, Babblemur ZERO.

"McGrumps 2, Babblemur ZERO."

Yeah that sucks for me, but St. Mary's and Oakland are turning out to be very good picks for you. ~Babs

My sleeper favorite now this year (since I'm destined to finish in the bottom 3):

4. Mad Mader 10 (8-1)

UCLA (Mad Mader), VCU (Gunz) and Wake Forest (Mooseye) all advanced in the NIT yesterday, play again today. ~Babs

If the children were gone and I had full access to the TV tonight I would be watching:

5PM Ohio St v. Florida - I'd like to see these teams play
6PM Colorado v. Georgia - both my teams
9PM Michigan St v. South Carolina - could be an exciting game (or a blowout)
10PM San Diego St v. Gonzaga - not a lot of opportunities to see the Aztecs play

I just realized I had Memphis-Miami on Tuesday. I fixed that, so McGrumps is now in second place...

Jutdog also starts shitty.

Babs, grow some balls, so you can watch some ball.

It's early Babs, but if Gonzaga stumbles tonight, then I accept my fate that my finish will be in the double digits.....

And can I give a "hoot" out to the fighing owls of Kennesaw St, only they appear to be able to slowdown the Jaydog

Man Ohio state looked really good tonight.

Man, Florida looked overrated tonight. And Ohio State looked great.

Speaking of overrated, Butler is looking like a spectacular second round pick...

Hey, Butler's starting to get scrappy and tenacious, I think they will make it a game. The hurt is that Louisville is christening in their new arena, which has them playing stronger than they are. ~Babs

Too little too late I fear.

Also, who would get a boost out of a stadium called the KFC Yum! Arena? Absurd.

Yes, clearly PETA does not have much influence in Louisville KY.

Nice job, Aztecs! Woo hoo! ~Babs

I can't take a thing away from the Aztecs, they were the agressor and played a great fearless game. It was almost outside of Gray, like Gonzaga was intimited on their own home court. I knew it would be a close game, but usually that means home court comes into play, congrats to a well played game Aztecs,

I accept my fate, my team is destined for my worst finish yet.

Well big fucking day yesterday for
Gunz (8 pts)
Mad Mader (8 pts)
and Boaris (7 pts)

Biggest upset: VCU over Wake, although who didn't see that coming? Mooseye lost out on 8 points with the Wake loss and the Florida loss.

Well here's the thing, the Aztecs were beasts, they played Top 10 B-ball, they looked like pros. So of course Gonzaga didn't look good in comparison.

Same thing with Florida - they looked like chumps only because Ohio State was ass-kicking monster squad. The Buckeyes will make everyone look like shit this year.

Well, outside of Gray, Gonzaga looked bad, Gray legitimately was the best player on the court, Leonard who is arguably San Diego St's best player was guarding Gray and he still went for 35 pts (2-10 on 3's is pretty brutal though), but where were Sacre, Olynyk, Harris (who is now potentially hurt), it was like the whole front line figured they didn't have to show up. I expect more from Mark Few and more from Harris, supposedly an All American 2nd team pre-season and a Wooden Candidate.......but comparing them with Florida, well, they got blown out on their homecourt, Gonzaga minus two TO's in the last minute had a legitimate shot to win a game they had no business winning.

Watch out for rising stars Columbia!

Missou St. kept it just close enough to give me hope, then they crushed it. I should know better than to get my hopes up this season.

BTW, no one took Oregon State.

And big WOW to Gunz - 16-0, top of the charts, unstoppable!

Yale? Iona? Really?

i get the feeling that points are going up much faster this year - maybe due to the extra teams.. that is except for Babs, CEO, and Musash

Hold that thought as Wofford sends G-Town packing tonight, well it doesn't hurt to have wishful thinking, does it....although I think Minnesota / Carolina will be a good matchup. I'd like to see a final in Puerto Rico of Minn vs Vandy

Also, I know it's early, but I like to see that even in the pre-season, Minnesota is beefing up their RPI by playing strong mid majors, Wofford picked to win their league, Siena picked 1 or 2 in theirs, Western Kentucky picked to win their half of their conf, Carolina tonight, will help once the grind of the Big 10 kicks in

Akaoni may not have won a head to head yet, but I'm not much better at like 1-5 now, it would be nice to win a close game (Gonzaga loses by 3 to SDSU, UCSB loses by 1 to Oregon including TO with 3 secs to go an no shot, Vandy gives up a 3 with 3 secs left today to West Virginia.)

That is the difference between the top of the list and us here bottom feeders
