Week Five: Jutdog, Progress, Akaoni

Week five was a slow week due to finals, but three players managed to really ramp it up despite this and make some waves in the standings.

Jutdog launched out of the basement and into 7th place with a 23 point week, including 15 points on Saturday alone. His teams went 10-2, and was led by strong Player vs. Player (PVP) games all around but particularly Stephen F. Austin which won back to back games against Jaybird's North Dakota State and Akaoni's Drake to take 6 points. Temple's big upset over top 10 Tennessee may have been sweeter though, giving the owls 5 points for that single win.

ProgressMedia however had almost as impressive a week as Jutdog with 22 points, going undefeated in 10 games, 5 of which were against other players. The final game Sunday was Arizona's upset of #4 Gonzaga for five points, which followed a Wednesday win over San Diego State (Babs). Progress Media jumped into 3rd place with this strong performance.

Akaoni tried to stay under the radar with a good performance this week, bringing in 20 points off of 12-3 play, including 4-3 play against other players. While it could have been a much better week it was enough to put him soldly in 4th place. New Mexico led for Akaoni with 6 points off of wins over San Diego (Jut) and Mississippi (Turtle).

The rest of the field for week five: Phunmunki 15, Babblemur 13, Gunz, Musa & the CEO 10 a piece, Boaris 9, Notaturtle 6, Jaybird 4 and HippieD 2.

Upset of the Week: Temple (Jut) over Tennessee (Musa) and Arizona (PM) over Gonzaga (Phunmunki).

Team of the Week: Arizona (Progress Media) with 8 points off of wins over #4 Gonzaga and San Diego State (Babs).

Sucker of the Week: HippieD, went 2-3 for 2 points.

Now I can talk shit again! Turtle is just above .580 winning percentage! Well done. My blind teams selected out of a hat of all NCAA teams was only at .555.

Don't worry though Iowa, you've aleady received one honor with a preseason poll first place vote.... shit, that was you voting for yourself.

Ah.. ah haa hah.

Also of significant note - I'm now beating the hell out of my brothers. No hall of fame room for chumps. That is also the reason why none of us have to fear Babbleturd winning. I do appreciate Bab's honors though, including back to back team of the week and then playa of the week.

Cleveland State making it happen giving the Cuse their first loss of the year.....

Whatever Jerkdog. You were right down with me one week ago.

Also, I haven't been keeping track of the scoring, but something's amiss. I'm positive I had over 50 points yesterday (51?), and my teams scored 7 points last night, but now I'm at 56? Norm Coleman should hire you guys to ensure he maintains his lead.

Wait, I see, you just haven't updated the scores yet. I think.

Scores updated! Notaturtle busts a move! One point behind the hugely pathetic HippieD!

It's going to be a late update this morning. Sick child is slowing me down.

Not a lot of action anyway. American not living up to their Rivals top 60 rating with a 4-5 record with 4 straight losses. Could be Navy coming out of the Patriot.

Middle Tenn St slips further with their biggest loss of the year. Probably a far tougher preseason than anything they face during the reg season though.

And, Illinois St hits the 10-0 mark. Granted, it doesn't appear any of their wins are over top 200 teams.

Not much tonight either. Louisville plays their first major conference squad, while UNC takes on a 7-1 Evansville. Cincy, a solid untaken team, takes on Miss St and could prove too much. Bottom line, Turtle is going down!

Standings NOW updated! No change in the ordering after Wednesday.

ITS ALL ABOUT SATURDAY.

Saturday is a HUGE day - just about every team is playing, 18 PVP Matchups, including two Top 10 Team Showdowns:
Duke (CEO) v. Xavier (Phun)
Gonzaga (Phun) v. UCONN (HippieD)

If Phunmunki wins both - 10 points in the bag.

Plus Minnesota (Gunz), Michigan St (Babs) and VCU (CEO) all have chances to knock off Top 10 teams on Saturday.

Someone add up "potential points" - that would be interesting.

If you get two teams into the final four, you'd score around 85 pts in NCAA play alone - even if you lose both final four games.

3 players have two teams in the current AP top 10: Boaris with Oklahoma and Pitt; Phun with Xavier and Gonzaga; Jutdog with the butt in Louisville (9) and Wake (10).

NCAA champ should alone take about 88 pts from the tourney. If the pack stays so tight, it would be tough for anyone not in the final 4 to even come close. Despite Boaris B squad sucking, the top two teams are playing quite well - arguably the best 1-2 punch of any.

Probably a good argument for devaluing the tournament in the future, as giving it so much value increases the crapshoot quotient of the league.

There is always room for amendments and improvements in our scoring system - almost trial and error based on someone's reasoning.

I think one for-sure for next year is that the Atl 10 is considered a major conference.

Of course there should be huge value for the NCAA. We'll see how it plays out.

I estimate that following Monday's matchups only about 12-15% of the total points will have been awarded out. Conference play will be huge this year, with endless head-to-heads, top 10 defeats, followed by conf tourneys which are back to back to back head to heads. As previously stated, the NCAA is huge too, but even the NIT includes many likely head to heads, maybe even the CBI. Following this holiday season, it is roll-up-the-sleeves time.

Another option to make things interesting would be rewarding bonus points for mid majors that get at large bids, not automatics.

Western Michigan, Alabama State, Middle Tennessee State, Cal St Northridge battling it out for worst pick, based on draft order, I'd say Middle Tennessee State holds that crown now (very dissapointing)

Most efficient team Charlotte, 2 of their three wins on the year were over other players

Tomorrow will bring many points, and some clarity to this season. Things I'm looking for:

Is Xavier real? Can Duke get back on track on the road?

Is UCONN hype or are they for real?

Interesting matchup Eric Maynor (VCU) faces the coach that recruited him Jeff Capel (Oklahoma). I think VCU has them outguarded, but the lack of an answer for the big boys inside will be their undoing. This likely will not be a pretty game for VCU unless they play like a star zone, packing all 5 in the key and praying for over the back calls.

Kansas / Temple (can the A-10 do in Kansas two weeks in a row?)

Lastly, I hope that UNLV / Arizona game is televised. Two teams I thought about taking (based on my model of likely teams picked, Arizona had the most head to head matchups, and I really like UNLV's team this year).

Staying out of the bottom (For now)

As of 4:53 p.m. Central time, Boaris and Babblemur are tied up at 99 points a piece...

Interesting strategy for Rick Pitino: Don't start any of your top 8 players - I'm guessing a rough week of practice. Hopefully lesson learned and they win 25 straight.

And we have a NEW LEADER!

Babblemur takes over first place! Woo Hoo!

I am on a two day vacation at the Wisconsin Dells - the condo cabin thing doesn't have wireless so updates for Sunday games and Monday games may be slow comin'.

The fact that I am in first place is really all you need to know.
