Week 13 Recap: Points Coming Down Like Honey From The Mountain

Points Coming Down Like Honey From The Mountain

...but who's getting them? Lets run it down:
  • Akaoni +33 - turned around a bad week to go 15-4, including an Illinois win over #5 Michigan State. Virginia Tech nailed two big ACC wins, Washington won 2 in the Pac 10, and newbies Charleston and Coastal went 2-0 a piece. Lead extended to 31 points.
  • Gunz +26 - pulled into second place past Boaris off 12 wins (coupled with 8 losses). Duke over Georgetown was worth 5, as was Wisconsin over Michigan St. UNLV won two big games in the Mountain West, and newbie Temple is keeping in the A-10 race with a 2-0 record.
  • Jaybird +26 - went 14-5, capped by a huge Georgetown win over Villanova on Saturday, and an important Dayton win over Xavier in the A-10. Newbies Northeastern and Murray St went undefeated as well. Jaybird is back in the hunt.
  • Jutdog +26 - The 26 points isn't as telling as the mere TWO losses that came with his 16 wins. Jut's teams won the big games and the little games and he is trying to make the case he is a contenda. Its easier to do when your teams win all their games.
  • Babblemur +26 - enough to put him ahead of The CEO, Babs could have done more given the 12-7 record for the week. Maryland, Notre Dame and Richmond all stepped up to keep Babs in the hunt.
  • Phunmunki +25 - The 11 wins netted enough points to cover up the 7 losses, all 7 of which were to other players. The bright points have to be Texas A&M winning 2 biggies, Wake winning two more in the ACC, and New Mexico's win over San Diego St.
  • Boaris +18 - The mighty Boaris went 3-5 against other players, versus a 12-6 record for the week. I can't say any of those 6 losses were upsets, but Boaris' success so far has been from winning the big games, and he didn't win them this week. Kudos to Florida though for two big SEC wins to keep in the hunt, and check out St. Mary's who is now 20-3 after 2 wins this week.
  • NotaTurtle +17 - One of two players with a losing record for the week (9-10) we have to give a rose to Gonzaga for wins over Portland and Memphis this week, and a thistle to Miami for dropping both of their games. Newby UTEP is going to make the CUSA interesting.
  • The CEO +17 - CEO couldn't win the head to head games, but Oklahoma's win over Texas salvaged the week and made up for Michigan State's choke. CEO went 11-7 for the week. Charlotte is looking like a promising draft choice...
  • Some Guy in Illinois +15 - 9-11 record for the week. 3-9 against other players. Louisville is the only team of 10 that didn't lose a game.
90 points now separate last place from first place. Still anyone's game?

Standings
  • 1. Akaoni - 258 (142-44)
  • 2. Gunz - 227 (135-55)
  • 3. Boaris - 224 (142-44)
  • 4. Jaybird - 224 (133-52)
  • 5. Jutdog - 205 (130-50)
  • 6. NotaTurtle - 196 (114-69)
  • 7. Babblemur - 195 (129-56)
  • 8. The CEO - 194 (128-59)
  • 9. Phunmunki - 184 (117-67)
  • 10. Some Guy in Illinois - 169 (123-67)

Despite having 3 teams in the top 12 of the new AP poll, I just don't feel very confident this year. Maybe I'd feel better if suddenly Minnesota lived up to about 1/2 of their preseason hype. I think West Virginia needs a big win - they have lots of solid wins, but maybe a nice home win over Villanova tonight would suffice.

It is very interesting to see #15- #19. This must now be the designated mid-major slot:

15. New Mexico 21-3 725
16. Gonzaga 19-4 693
17. Brigham Young 22-3 532
18. Butler 20-4 422
19. Northern Iowa 21-2 298

I'd take Butler over those other four any day. Oh wait, I did.

You just can't keep a good Oni down. Now let's see if I can't knock off Kansas and make the Big 12 more competetive...

Wow Morgan State barely held on to their undefeated conference record, huh? 48-47.

So I just passed Turtle on the leaderboard, now I'm in 6th place by 0 points.
Babblemur 196
Notaturtle 196
The CEO 195

Notaturtle and The CEO face off tonight - Michigan St (CEO) vs. Purdue (NAT) = FIVE points to the winner (both top 10 teams). So I guess one of those bums will pass me and hit the 200 mark.

However I have Vandy playing Tennessee tonight for 3 points, a win there will put me just 6 points behind Jut. Jut needs that Tenn win though, and the Boston College vs. Wake game, if wants to start being considered a "top tier" player.

With Michigan St's loss and Illinois' win last night we have a scrum at the top of the Big 10 standings.

TEAM CONF. W-L OVERALL W-L
Michigan State 9-3 19-6
Illinois 9-3 17-8
Ohio State 8-3 18-6
Purdue 8-3 20-3
Wisconsin 8-4 18-6

I think most people (myself included) would be surprised to see Illinois with the rest of the group after their spotty pre-conference performance, but there they are. It will be interesting to see how this turns out.

Illinois is a tough team, based on the few times I've watched them play. These five should be shoe ins for the NCAA Tourney fo sure. -Babs

Illinois still has a tough road in front of them. Here's their remaining schedule:

OSU, @PUR, @MICH, MINN, @OSU, and WIS.

They could easily drop 4 of 6 down the stretch and find themselves in the NIT. I'm hoping they do better, but I doubt they'll be in the hunt for the Big 10 title when all's said and done.

Well Jaybird went 3-1 yesterday to pull into second place.

Turtle's 5 point win over The CEO pushed him just four points behind the struggling Jut, who hasn't won a game yet this week.

The CEO is also taking a beating, look out CEO, Phunmunki is creeping up behind you!

Some good games Wednesday - can Akaoni be stopped? Syracuse should whup UCONN, but Florida better not let the gamecocks win, that would be a sucky win for Akaoni.

Gunz has a shot at 13 points tonight, if he pulls off 7 of those points he could be back in second place.

Jutdog has NO GAMES tonight. NotaTurtle and Babblemur are both in a good position to pass his ass on the leader board. Turtle only has 3 solid points though, UCONN is struggling and Syracuse ain't. Babs also has tough games, and no sureties for the 7 points he could get.

The CEO could turn his fortunes around with 9 points if his teams don't screw up again.

Purdue in great position, hosting Michigan State in rematch later this year, Ohio State, oh, what could have been had Turner not go hurt, I'd say everyone else would be looking up at them had he not gotten hurt....

Huge Huge Huge game in A-10 tonight Charlotte / Dayton, CEO needs that win more than he's needed a win all year

Note, Morgan St's narrow victory likely related to the fact that their Sat game was delayed to Sunday so they played back to back days, that's twice now in the last two weeks, I'm hoping that helps them for upcoming conf tourney, but a 1 pt victory is just a little too close for comfort.

How about Cincy, getting 2 field goals and 3 freethrows in the last 10 min's against Syracuse, blowing a six pt lead, what a sick game that had to have been for the home crowd,

Go Huskies!!! Down with Oni!

akaoni said...

Well, that was nervewracking...thankfully Syracuse got that phantom time out to save the day.

Northwestern had the cards to make the NCAA as a seed equal or higher than a 10. Why fold to Iowa, of all teams...

Charlotte looking good tonight

And it looks like Arkansas is making its bid for the SEC shitty side title. If only they could combine lasst years out of conference play with this years inner conference play, and they might live up to half the hype from shitbag CEO.

Nice Charlotte, really nice, and oh Pacific, please lay down, and Michigan State, your last 7 days has been outstanding, Bab's you cursed me, and oh yes, Arkansas has now moved 1 pt ahead of Charlotte.

Good times as I slip to the bottom and fade into another mediocre year......

-The CEO

akaoni said...

On a positive note, my teams won all four of their games last night and CEO's selection of Charlotte prevented me from chasing fool's gold!

Thanks CEO!

Also, tonight's match up between Cal and Washington could have implications for who ends up taking the Pac 10 crown. Washington's big issue this year has been that they absolutely cannot win on the road. Of their 7 losses, 5 have come on the road (and one in neutral territory).

But they've won 4 straight and have played better recently. I think if they win this one it will get them over the hump and will take the Pac 10 crown. Will they get their first road win? I think they just might.

YOUR GOIN DOWN AKAONI! BOO HUSKIES! COMMIES!

Back to the middle of the pack:

# 5. Jutdog - 205 (130-54)
# 6. NotaTurtle - 204 (118-71)
# 7. Babblemur - 203 (133-56)
# 8. The CEO - 200 (132-63)

CEO doesn't count tonight because he's only got one crappy game against South Utah which he'll probably lose.

Jut's got 5 possible, but given that he hasn't won all week, can Minnesota manage to beat Michigan?

Turtle's got 5 possible, and Gonzaga vs. St. Mary's is the critical win (with the WCC on the line).

Babs has 9 points up tonight, including the aforementioned showdown with Cal-Wash, Notre Dame vs. Seton Hall. Can Babs finally pull back into fifth place, and lead the attack on the top tier?

Boaris, Gunz, and Jaybird got nothing much going for the next two days. Time to get some movement on the leaderboard!

DOWN WITH THE TOP TIER!

akaoni said...

You cellar dwellers just don't know your place!

akaoni said...

Commies?

Anonymous said...

How am I that close to 5th, I've lost like greater than 50% of my games over the last two weeks, and all critical 5 ptr's and mos 3 ptr's,

-The CEO

Anonymous said...

Yes, CEO, Jut and Turtle have been sucking as bad as you, while I, Babblemur, have been steadily rising from the dark corner of 'cellar' to challenge for chief-cellar-dweller.

Then I will lead my fellow cellar-dweller rabble with my queen-cellar-dweller Phun to rise up and overthrow the "top tier" and their elitest sense of entitlement! We shall Storm the conference tournaments! We shall lock up all at-large bids to the Big Dance! Our seeds shall be favorable and our victories replayed on SportsCenter!

Beware, Akaoni! Jaybird! Boaris & Gunz! Your teams will Suffer on Saturday and the wealth shall be re-distributed!*

*(and I mean 'real' wealth re-distribution, not the pansy smack that Rush and his clones accuse Obama of supporting, which is just capitalism perpetuation. I'm talking not just 12 seeds over fives, but elevens over sixes!

ELEVENS OVER SIXES! JUDGEMENT DAY APPROACHETH!

akaoni said...

Ah, I see now, you were declaring yourselves COMMIES. Well, if the shoe fits...

And we see that Washington does really suck, especially on the road. Oh well, good on ya Babs.

Don't let this go to your head however. You may get 7 teams into the dance but most of them will be snuffed in the first or second round as is proper. That is to say, you haven't a prayer of winning this thing.

When will the prols learn their place?

Anonymous said...

Akaoni has an uncanny knack for winning games he shouldn't. South Carolina over Florida for example.

So lets say a little prayer and hope that West Virginia doesn't fuck up and lose to Pittsburgh tonight.

I'm lighting a candle.

Maybe you're just mis-underestimating my teams.
